USA Oxygen sensor

My car is camry 97 made in japan, 4 cylinders and around 77,400 miles.
The light is turning on the engine check so unfortunately, I need to replace them.

1. How many wires of the oxygen sensor in the back side are ?

2. Can I use the Universial sensor ? The original sensor is too expensive around $300.

Chris

Thank you so much for your replies. It is really helpful.

Did you have the trouble codes readout? Try looking up the part at www.rockauto.com. Their prices are cheaper.

Service manuals are available from the link below.

They shouldne be that much, I got the rear one on my 94 for around $175, and one of the front ones for about $200 (plus labor).

It may be since he is from California, that his car doesn't have an O2 sensor, but rather a air/fuel ratio sensor. I have never worked with one, but from what I understand they can be very expensive. They may explaing the $300 price. They are supposed to be more accurate than an O2 sensor.

hojong,

The MIL being on is not a signal for you to go change the 02 sensor. Did you have the vehicle diagnosed? or at least pull a trouble code?

As Mike Gerber mentioned, Ca. emission certified camrys are equipped w/ an A/F sensor. It looks like a regular O2S but behaves completely different. The only problem I have come across for primary A/F sensors are open heater circuits, DTC P0135. I replaced 1 last week. List Price for the part $259 at the dealership. To verify if your vehicle is equipped w/ either an HO2S or A/F sensor, check the vehicle emission label under the hood.
