3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I guess Ill start off by saying that im new here, and I just bought a 2000 Camry today.
My question is, I want to install my subwoofers from my old car into my new one. I installed them myself on my old car, so I know a little bit about installing the stuff with basic wiring. Do you guys know if the stock head unit is wired for subwoofers, or do I need to put in my aftermarket one? Also, do you guys have a good DIY link with pictures on how to take out the stock head unit? And lastly, is there already a hole in the firewall that I can work with?
you can hook just about any factory sound system to subs but im almost positive that teh factory unit isnt build for direct connection. u should search the sound forums too.
Well the stock head unit (At least mine anyways) doesn't have RCA outputs if that's what your'e wondering. I recommend just getting a good aftermarket one. Or the one in your old car?
Thanks for the site to the headunit. That step by step makes it a breeze. I still have the HU out of my old car, so I will install that one.
Ill get under the hood tomorrow after class, and see if I can find that hole that you used on yours. It was cake running the power lines in my BMW, because the battery was under the back seat. So this engine bay stuff sucks, lol.
Ill try to get it all done tomorrow, Thanks for the imput guys.
since you have the rest answered, i had to drill a hole through my firewall (1997 camry) in order to make the wires go through. if youve done this before then it shouldnt be a problem to install things. well have fun and enjoy your ride =]
that opening wont be on that side for us in america.
you can have a couple of options.
1 install new aftermarket or old aftermarket.
2 use a line converter in you dash or rear in trunk(like jl clean sweep) to convert the high voltage power to low voltage power.
3 get a amplifier that has the capablitiy to use the higher voltage inputs (since you can use your antenna Lead for an remote turn on(i think it works for a cd too but not sure or you can use a acc or onn power source))
i think if you like the stock radio you have some option but easer woulb be just to put a aftermarket radio in

Thanks for the imput guys. I got it all done today, so im really happy.
I got a buddy to help me drill a hole in the firewall behind the drivers side dashboard. Everything is working great, and I love the new set up. The subs sound way better in my Toyota than the BMW because there was a huge steel sheet on the back of the rear seat.
Once again, thanks for the imput.
Now Im off to find out how hard it is to swap radiators, lol.
