Question 99 Camry 4cyl died

My buddy bought a 99 Camry with 35k on it for 8k in October. He bought it from a used car lot and bought the extended 6 month guarantee. He was driving home and the car died. But right before the car died the oil light flashed on then off. He said that when he hit the accelerator the car lost more and more power. What could this be? Oil pump?

could be. but if its still under warranty then id take it back and make them fix it for FREE regardless of what it is. some more details would help too. any smoke, noise, vibrations, smells all tell a little piece of the puzzle.

I agree with bigbird. More details are needed. What is the car doing now?. Does the starter crank (turn) the engine? If so, is the engine getting spark and fuel? Does the engine seem to be cranking faster than normal?

Mike

The engine cranks normally. My buddy told me that when the car initially stopped, something near the belt was smoking, but his alternator seems to be fine.

It was his belt. It snapped. His mechanic is rebuilding the engine cause it threw his pistons outta wack. This leads me to believe that there was some serious tampering going on with the used car dealer. All that's left is for my buddy to chew out the dealer and make them pay for it.

a broken belt shouldnt shouldnt require rebuilding the engine. all it needs is a new timing belt job.

This is a non-interference engine. Should not hurt engine at all. Pistons should be just fine. All he needs is a new timing belt. Mechanic is screwing him around.

4th Generation

Hi - just a matter of interest - are all 99 4-cyl camrys non-interference or only US - because there are Japan and Australia models as well.

Thats exactly what I was going to say, but it seems unlikely for a car with only 36K.

My timing belt was damaged when I was getting on the highway, and I had the same exact problem, luckily the Camry's are non-interference engines.

ODO Rollback. Do a carfax report. If the ODO is rolled back, your going to get 100% of the $ back for the car.
