A540 Converter Re-Install

Is there anybody that has experience properly re-istalling their converter into an A540? (92 Camry V-6). I've trashed two pumps, and can't figure out what's going wrong. It seems like the converter "seats" in the pump drive, but when I start up, it's grind pop and gone.

For a 540E, refill from dry is 6.2 qts (2.6 qts drain and refill). For a 540H 7.4 qts (3.5 qts drain and refill). Also make sure the torque converter is seated at the right depth. Some of these installations require measuring the depth. The link below provides access to Toyota service manuals.

Thanks for the info. I have been measuring the converter depth, shows OK, but when I bolt the converter up to the flex plate the converter pulls back towards the block. My guess is this is the problem, that the converter drive is dissengaging from the oil pump drive. The car only has 90K on it, I can't imagine the flex plate is bad. It worked fine before I pulled it.

Sorry for the so reply, been busy rebuilding the tranny. Wasn't the converter after all. Was the oil pump jammed into the front clutch assembly, due to missing information from the Toyota factory manual. Seems you need to relieve tension from the front "band" as there's a spring loaded piston that needs to be removed before you pull the oil pump, and re-install it. So to anyone who's reading, be SURE to pick up the ATSG manual from a tranny supplier BEFORE attempting any work on an A540. The Toyota manual is not what you need. Happy wrenching!
