3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 99 Camry 5SFE, it making wierd noises when i try to start it in the cold...I mean it starts but when its cold outside and i start it up, it makes a noise it wont start, so it turn it off and restart the engine and starts normally...What could it be when i first start the car it makes a noise like it wouldnt start type of thing, its hard to explain, but when i try again it starts....
1)What could be wrong?
Also, since i live on a slight hill, most of the times the engine starts and the fails...it'll begin and a second later its turns off. SO i pump the accelerator and couple of times and retry if it does this again...what i usually do is before it turns off...i'd leave my foot on the accelerator rev-ing up to 2000 RPMs for 5 seconds and it will being it normall warming up process ( if it called that) ....
2)What could be causing this?
Last but not least, i've notice that when i have my car on park with lights on and ac on...the lights on the guage on the headlights dim on idle, but once i rev it to at least 1000 RPMs, they brighten up and the ac speeds up...
3)Could it be that it is a bad battery?...should i replace it?

mmm my idle is around 800 rpm when fully warmed up. lights and everything does dim/slow down at idle which is pretty normal.
some people get a new or larger alternator to solve problems like that, but if your car doesnt stall and the battery stays charged, i wouldnt worry about it.
I cleaned the battery terminals and it helped a little bit, but the dimming of the gauges still happens...what can the problem be?
The dimming of the gauges sounds perfectly normal to me. When the engine's RPM's increase, the alternator spins faster, thus the alternator's output is greater. The lights therefore get brighter. If you are really concerned about it, take your car to any auto parts store that offers free checking of the alternator and battery and have them check out both items. You can do this just for peace of mind.

that could be a dirty battery connection or a battery on its way out. how old is the battery? a video with sound would help others help you on that one.

first of all, pumping the accelerator with the engine OFF does absolutely nothing. that's something that you do on cars running carburettors. your car has fuel injection.
nevertheless, it sounds like a dirty throttle body or a dirty/stuck idle air control valve

that's normal, however, it is more noticeable on a battery that is on its way out.
