3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have been interested in the differnece between the 1mz and 3vz and im wondering peoples opinions on which engine they prefer.
I know the 1mz is distributerless with coil-packs has the OBD-II computer and slightly more power, but after driving the gen 3 (strictly 3vz only here in Australia) and the Gen 4 (first of the 1mz) I tend to like the 3vz better. It seems more 'gruff' and has a real sweet willingness to rev to the limiter. Low rpm with heavy throttle sounds deeper and more 'angry' ... I reckon it has more character over the 1mz... what do you guys reckon?

well i know people like the 3vz for its higher strength, some people like the 1mz's power(not much of a difference). personally ive only owned the 1mz but since both were gen3 they both had the PWR button that allowed the revs to reach redline. gen4+ didnt have that little feature. i have driven both 3vz and 1mz of the gen3 and never really noticed much of a differance.
Well you have to ask yourself the question of which 1mz-fe? the 94-96, the revised intake, the vvt-i, or those + dual tb's & the plastic manifold.
regardless, i'd rather have a 3vz-fe. i have to fewer penalties to pay for too many benifits.
in complete form a 3vz-fe:
is less than 100lbs heavier...
has a MUCH stronger bottom end, especially the pistons, which are an older style of construction & have nearly a point less compression.
rods are bigger
iron block... The mz aluminum block in the SAE engineering paper actually has 20% more regidity. OK... the 3vz-fe has a huge aluminum girdle holding the amin bearings down that most people pay $200-400 for to be made custom.
never had OSKSS (Over-sensative knock sensor syndrom)...
no pre-cats, no emessions monitoring & a mpg less economy - yes. I clubbing baby seals with my emessions control-less ES 300.
The OBD-I management is much simpler, and you can get it to do strupidly large changes with quality piggybacks & planning. Shit that you'd never attempt on an OBD-II engine to the scale you could on this engine...
Has an AFM that looses 3.7bhp @ .7ft-lbs of torque @ 330bhp. That's not very much...
AFM allows adjustable idle mixture, and a corase mixture adjustment... free...
Distributor easy to deal with electrically, and can change base timing events... free...
Ignition upgrade is simple. Put in an MSD coil & forget about it. (1mz-fe's have no such easy ignition ugprade. wasted spark ignition expencive to upgrade. '94 COP ignition is more SOL when you hit the point of needing more spark.)
3vz-fe makes 185bhp/195ft-lbs, is easily tweaked to make 200bhp/204ft-lbs
3vz-fe's management allows 7100-7500rpm untouched before a hard fuelcut, redlines @ 6850rpm. I've logged mine on my old smt6 running 7500rpm before fuel-cut. now a pair of 3vz-fe mr2 v6 swaps have confirmed that... toyota tachs are too ******* laggy...

after driving 6 cyl commodores and falcons i was pleasantly surprised with the low range response of the 3vz. without flooring it or redlining it, the 3vz seems to pull away nicely from a light touch of the accelerator when cruising at 60-70kph. i believe the 1mz has a totally different power/torque line, but i haven't driven one to compare it.

older falcodores have shit auto trannys, period. theyre more grunty down down low but the boxes are piss crap.

i prefer the 1mz's power to the 3vz, its much more smoother (who the hell says teh 3vz is more?)
although the standard tranny vavle pressure is toow eak... gear changes are slooopy

"3vz-fe makes 185bhp/195ft-lbs, is easily tweaked to make 200bhp/204ft-lbs"
easily?
lean the cog, give it another 5* of timing
200bhp and gobs of torque.
1mz is more of a midrange engine.

only for the trucks.
i'd rather have a powerband to compliment the transmission in the vehicle lol!
