thats what i was thinking, since it is up high in the engine, i would like to remove it but i dont want it melting my hood or messing with the paint on the hood, or melting the fabric thing under the hood.

lol heres how to think about it, theres a heat shield on ur hood (fireproof material or w/e) and so ur paint will be OK. i have the v6 that runs WAY hotter than your i4 and mine never even came with a head shield. Besides the radiator fans that look yellowed with white lines all over them (looks like they're going to crack cos of heat), everything on my car is fine.
my 86 celica (3SGE) had the headshield removed AND the bonnet (hood) lining removed before i bought it.
on a rainy day, steam rises from the top of the bonnet every time i stop at the lights and although most of the paint work is faded, the bonnet is the worst affected section.
also, most of the wiring sitting anywhere near the exhaust manifold has gone brittle.
i'd say leave it on. it's there for a reason, not just so that they could put a hot symbol on it.
I dont' have that heat shield because it was rattling. Between not having the heat shield, and not having that pad crap, the hood gets pretty warm. The only issue I've had is when my car's just sitting around idleing, snow melts and runs off the hot hood, and then when it hits the cool front end, it freezes and ice builds up.
of course, it won't happen overnight. but long term effects will be evident later on. if you're not going to keep the car for more than 3-5 years, then i don't think you'll notice any issues.
