Check Engine Light - P0172

Hi Guys

I recently bought a second hand Toyota Camry ( 99, LE, 2.2L 4 Cyl) with 98K miles on it.

I got the check engine light a week ago after i put fuel that day. I just tightened the fuel cap and it went off for a while. But then it came again the next day. When i checked the code, it read P0712 - System Too Rich on Bank 1.

I drove with the light on and i started facing problems like engine started stuttering when standing in signals. Also one time i smelled foul odour when i stopped for the signal.

After few mechanics looked at the vacuum lines and air filter, i took it to the dealer for a full check up. Dealership says that the vacuum is leaking in the cruise control cylinder ( is there anything like that?? ) which is causing the check engine light to come on.

They are quoting around $335 to replace this thing.

I said i do'nt want the cruise control. Just fix the leak. But they say that its not possible to fix the leak without replacing the Cruise Control Cylinders.

Is this analysis correct ? I am not sure if they are taking me for a ride!!!

NOTE:
This is my first car and i do'nt know much about cars...

Thanks

The earlier model had an electric cruise system with metal cables running to the throttle pulley. No vacuum lines. Not sure on the model. Use a small bottle of natural gas, propane, etc with bottle on and flame out. Run over the areas of suspected leaks and see if the idle picks up. Then see if you can cap off any hose running to the leaking item.

Surprisingly, the problem is not seen after i changed the fuel cap. I also do not see any problem with the idling when stopping for signals.

I do not know what really these dealer guys analysed.

If I've learned anything over the years it's not to trust dealers.
