3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
WOW! After searching, I was amazed at some of the heated discussions regarding air filters and whether to go with a paper or oiled filter, which brand and type (drop in, CAI, etc). Anyway, I opted for the OEM paper drop in and man, can I really tell a difference. The replaced filter wasn’t all that dirty, just been a while since its been changed (30K). Once changed I thought the car ran smoother but assumed it was in my head. Wife took the car for an errand and upon returning asked what I did to the car. I was like “Oh crap, why, what happened?” She said it runs better and quieter. Cool.
they go by 15000 now because of the 5K oil change interval. 12000 in the past because of the 3k interval. i know its not very logical but its kinda what happend.
15,000 is quite reasonable as i just checked the factory filter on our HL that reached 15,000 and its getting grey all over so its time for a change.
i cant imagine 30K tho. terrible gas mileage as the engine is struggling to breath with emphazima
I had blown it out a few times with the air compressor in those 30K, which keeps it fairly clean, at least to the naked eye. It was like nodrogkam said, sorta gray all over, nothing major.
But dysk8forlife & saybakgung got it right, what may not look all that dirty to the naked eye, can make a noticeable difference. I was surprised.
And yes, recommended change interval is 15K, and I'll be sticking to it.
