3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I didnt think id be next guys, but it looks like Im on the way out of the gen 3 camry scene...
I was in the midst of a manual swap this week down at speed source, but the guys ran into a pretty big snag and have caused me to decide not to continue with the car. The subframe was completely rusted and the only way they would have been able to complete the swap would be to remove the engine, doubling the cost of labor, if not more. On top of that, the rear main seal is going and the engine is in need of some TLC. Not the best platform to continue to modify...
So with that being said, i dont want to finish the car. I would rather move on to something newer that i can have beyond college and have a good time with. I am currently looking at a white 99 solara 5 speed with the 1mz in my area, which would be a nice upgrade and closer to what im looking for in a car right now, not to mention my rims would fit it. So Im really sad to see my car go, but I think maybe this is a sign that it is time to move on...
School is extremely busy for me right now, but I am going to try to begin the part out of my modifications. Some of them were never installed or are already removed, so those will be the first things to go. It is going to take me some time to remove the parts and get them ready to sell, but some will be easier than others, so the thread should be up tonight.
It has been really fun and a huge learning experience for me to mod this car- it really breaks my heart to give up being so close, but I think it may just be the smartest decision to make right now. Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way, i will still be around to help moderate and help everyone with their gen 3 questions the best i can as i dive head first into a solara. Thanks for everything gen 3 guys!
Well, at least you're staying in the Toyota family...
I keep on having little nagging issues with my car since I've put another engine in it. I haven't put *too* much money into it yet, but I'm getting to the point where I could have put the money I'm spending on a much newer, much more upgradeable vehicle...
My ex-boss keeps on trying to get me to swap the car straight-up for his '96 240SX convertible (he wants it for his daughter and new grandson). I'm trying to hold out until he just wants to sell it, then I can have both at my disposal.
Either way, you've always been a helpful source on TN and I hope that continues. Sorry to hear about what you found out about your car, though.

but I can understand when something as important as rust starts poping up....that along with the fact that you just want a fast car (I'm guessing this is a big part of the reason) and the 5sfe is not going to cut it.
but otherwise....could I suggest a v6 w/ 5speed swap? it'd be a bit of work, but if you do the mechanical side yourself, all you would have to do is pay somebody to do the wiring, which most of us don't want to tackle.
could come out pretty cheap in the end, and then you'd have a pretty fast car....and a possiblity for future boost.

we started out as brother cars, now cousin cars, and what'll happen now?
it'll be sad to see the camry go but i guess if it fits the situation then it's ok. all change is good, generally. and whatever happens, happens for the best.
p.s. try to find a 3rg gen v6 coupe, yah? oh, and make sure whatever you get it'll be a white car =P

the solara im going to look at tomorrow is WHITE!!
Yeha thanks king, its a bummer though because I couldnt really do the work myself. I know some stuff, but I dont really have the tools or knowledge to pull a swap off. i think it may just be time to move on to a new car.
And thanks milt, thats really nice! I have always wanted a solara and it was never a possibility until now. Hopefully the one I see tomorrow will be in good shape. I really want a white one for sure, would just be a really nice upgrade for a kid my age...
Ill be honest, I cried about it but maybe everything is happeneing this way for a reason...
Man, that sucks majorly. But like pussies said when shit like rust starts popping up, its time to move on . At least youll keep it in the toyota family .
FIrst matt, then damon, and now milt, jesus christ........... I feel like im the only one now seriously modding the camry ..

But youre carrying all of our dreams george! we need you to keep our hope alive! your car will be sick george, I know it will.
Mods will be on hold for a while with the new car prince, but by the end of the summer Id like to have a gen 1 solara dropped with my rims on it, molly designs trd kit, and maybe some other small stuff... gotta find a good one first
It seems to be about that time that our Gen 3's are dropping like flies. I dont' want to try to put myself on the same level that your car is/was, cause mine was never that nice, but still all the really modded stuff is going bye bye. Good luck with finding a new car. I've been hard at work searching, but haven't found mine yet ( I can't say what it is, I'll get banned)
