help -- '97 brake pedal squeaks

I have an annoying squeak in my brakes, it squeaks when I am releasing the pedal. The noise comes from the plunger going into the booster, not the linkage on the pedal ( I lubed it to no avail). It can be heard from outside the car and inside. Any ideas on what it is and how to fix it?

Does the sound originated from the inside or outside of the car?
I have similar problem, but the squeal was coming from the brake drums in the rear. The squeal occurs consistently every time I release the break pedal. I have not looked at it yet, but I believe something needs to be lubricated, or simply the brake shoe needs to be replaced.

yeah get it flushed and get new fluid in there. you may also want to replace the master cylinder... thats what i did one time when mine was squeaking. its fairly cheap. you can pretty much do all of this yourself too. as long as the brake booster isnt messed up somehow.

Like Keithy said, it depends where it's coming from. It could very well be a contaminated master cylinder, which would kinda suck...

The noise I was having is identical to Keithy's. Whenever I stopped, and took my foot off the brake, i'd get a slow squeal. It's the shoes, where they contact the brake backing plate, rear brakes. All I did was take off the drums, pry the shoes up just enough to put some anti-sieze where they were rubbing, and i'm good. I did that about a year ago and haven't heard a peep from them since.

The noise is definitely coming from the master cylinder area, that's most likely the problem, I'll have to have the shop look at it. Thanks for the help.
