Hello, I have a 98 le with the 4 cylinder about a year ago I drove it without enough oil and then it started knocking. It sounds like something is like a bolt or somthing is bouncing around in it. I took off the valve cover and did not see anything wrong. So I drained the oil and did not see anything in the oil. I was thinking about taking off the oil pan next. I have not driven it scince then, it cut off on me back then after I drove it for a while so I didnt want to mess it up worse. Anybody have any suggestions?
well u can be assusred that if somthing was bouncing around in the oil pan ur engine prolly would have completley torn itself apart by now. drop the pan and see if there is anything in it, draining wont remove any large chunks of metal. if the water pump was going ud most likley have problems with engine temp. it may be a spun bearing which can happen if the engine is running to dry for a while. hope this helps a little.
If you ran it really low on oil, enough to stall the motor (the engine siezed), stop thinking it might be the water pump. You've wasted the motor. One or more bearings is spun, and this is not a simple repair.
As TN posters have stated. If you ran out of oil, most likely the engine has internal damage and will need to be taken apart to determine just what. Most likely at least a rod bearing.
Rod Knock, didn't he do some 'adult' movies in the late 80's?...
Anyways, that's the exact sound my engine was making when I burned up a couple of rod bearings. The noise was very faint at idle, but when I would accelerate, I'd hear it. I would second that you drop the oil pan, that would tell you right there, because just draining the oil might not show you much.

use a stethoscope on the block, and pull out the spark plug wires one at a time. If it quiets when you pull a plug out, you fount out which one roasted a bearing..

How did you know that the engine was low on oil? Did you see the low oil pressure light come on briefly from time to time? Did you see the low oil pressure light come on and stay on for minutes at a time? How long have you driven with the low oil problem?
