3rd Generation 4cyl transmission problems

Hi all quick Q.

About a year ago I changed the transmission fluid and filter on my camry. While changing it the filter had a clip that held two wires on it. One of the wires I didn't put back under the filter clip. Well 4 months later I started having transmission problems. Basically the spedometer stays on 0 and the transmission doesn't shift properly. Could it be that wire that I didn't put back under that clip? Any body knows what those two wires do?

Sounds like the VSS wire got unplugged to me. That's the one that lets the car know how fast it's going.

Where is it located so I can check? Well one thing I forgot to mention is once it is warm the speedoeter will cut off and on. It is only on while you are giving it gas though. take your foot of the gas and it just drops to 0. BUt it goes and comes.

Do you know where it is located?

Can't give you a good reason really. After I had everything torqued back down I noticed it was in the clip on the transmission filter with the other wire. Do you know what wire I'm talking about?

This doesn't make any sense. Why did it work for 4 months then? I have no idea what that wire that can be, but I bet this is an unrelated problem.

Maybe you have a contact problem to the instrument panel?

You are right about that. One thing I was thinking about. But the problem came on gradually. The car started shifting worse and worse as time wore on and the techometer started working less and less of the time. BUt it all started 4 months or so after I did the Transmission fluid change.

Now from a cold start I put the car in D and it holds on to 1st gear for a good while just reving higher and higher and then bam it shifts into secound and the od light starts flashing. After that it shifts more normaly. After it warms up the techometer starts working a little and it'll shift breifly in and out of gear. It is exactly like the transmission doen't know what gear it wants to be in.

OK then. The OD light flashes, so it is definitley not a instrument panel problem, but something with the transmission. But if it was perfect for 4 months, I still think it is unrelated to the wire.

But anyway: why don't you drop tha pan and reconnect the wire? It can't hurt.

Well I never disconnected the wire. I just didn't put in its clip. I guess no one here knows what those two wires are that the filter holds up. Anyways I am going to drop it and have a looksy.

I had a similar problem when I installed my black reverse gauges. The speedo didn't work, the o/d light flashed and the tranny used to race and wouldn't shift sometimes till 6k rpms. Turns out one of the pin connectors in the back of the gauge clusted wasn't fully clicked it. Scared the hell out of me cause I couldn't fathom how installing gauges would've screwed with my tranny.

This obviously doesn't pertain to you but the effects from that sound like what your experiencing.
