Program New Key 2000 Camry Xle V6

I Just puchased a new spare key for My 2000 Camry XLE V6. It has the chip in it. Is will turn the engine over but not start it. Is there a way to program it without brining it to the dealer. Thanks

I think this is a dealer only issue.

Most newer cars have coded engine immobiliser system. The keys have an electronic code that matches a code held in the engine management system. It matches the codes everytime the key is inserted into the starter. If the code is not right the car will not start. You can bring it to the dealer or some updated Locksmiths will have the ability to re-program the keys for you. You'll just have to call and search around for price and information. Price ranges from about $30- $50 I believe.

BTW I hoped that helped.

As long as you have another Master Key (with Chip) you could program it. i was looking into this like 3 months ago for my Father's Sienna. There is a sequence that you have to do i remember i found lots of information on it but i didn’t have to attempt, turned out the sienna didn’t have the chip key function.

try this

Programming spare keys: for 1998 to 2002

1.. Copy the cuts of the original working key onto the appropriate
transponder blank.

2.. Enter the car and close all of the doors.

3.. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals.

4.. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.

5.. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release
the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release four times for a valet key.)

6.. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key. (Depress and release only times for a valet key.)

7.. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the
key.

8.. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position.

9.. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.

10.. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

Well i don't how to program keys, but i know someone that had the same problem, the copied key wouldn't start the engine. You can take it to a place that does sound/security systems they should have the programmer to program the copied, where i went with the person they were asking for $60 where was the dealer was asking almost $100. Depends on what you want to do, i know someone that lives in upstate New York, i'll find out if they live near SLATE HILL to see if they have connections around there...

Does anyone know how many transponder keys are permitted by the computer system in a '98 Camry? I wanted to get several made, but I've been told there's a limit to how many master keys can be associated with one system. Is that true?
