96 camry 2.2, has spark and gas. No Start

Hello,

Im having some trouble getting my 96 camry to start. I have checked all the fuses, relays, timing belt is in tack (rotor is spinning while cranking), there is spark at the spark plug wires, fuel at the fuel filter, and timing seems to be alrite. I tried to get the car into diagnostic mode, but it won't enter into it. I thought for sure this was a good sign that the ecu was bad, so I swapped out a working unit, and still a no go. The car would not enter diagnostic mode with the new ecu either! Im stumped on this one. I can't seem to figure out why the car won't enter diagnostic mode. When i jump the two terminals, turn the key to on, the check engine light stays solid. I even tried the diagnostic port under the dash, same situation.

I can crank the car over, but it does not start. The tach will sit at 250 rpm and not budge. The car drove fine, then 5 hours later it started for less than 5 seconds and died, and it still sits. Anyone have any ideas? Im thinking perhaps the crank angle sensor, I have ordered one but would hate to use it if its not the issue. (expensive part!) any help would be great. I will be taking the two hour trip again thursday or friday to attempt to get the car running again.

thanks,
Mark

what diagnostic mode are you talking about?

your 96 5sfe is obdII, so jumping terminals will not get you any codes. you need an obdII code reader to get the codes off the ecu.

it's good that you say you have fuel and spark

now check to see if you are getting air readings (i.e. maf sensors/wiring, etc)
but the easy thing now as well is once you get hte code read, it will tell you what's wrong as well

autozone or your local napa or pep boys should be able to read the codes for you for free...too bad your car isn't even driveable. you may be able to rent one though...not sure...or borrow one with a deposit or something...?

also, as a long term good to have tool anyway, you should pick up the cheap obdII readers off of ebay such as these ones.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AutoS...98393930QQrdZ1

they aren't fancy at all, but they do what they need to do- show you the code, as well as clear codes.
