4th Generation I4 auto to manual swap...can I use V6 manual or Celica manual?

I've read a number of threads on people doing this swap, but since I have a 4 cylinder, can I use a 6 cylinder manual tranny from a Camry, or do I have to find a 4 cylinder manual from a Camry?

Also, are there other Toyota cars I can use to get a manual tranny from? From those cars, does it also have to be 4 cylinder, or can I use the 6?

Thanks!
Mike/Gameday

i may be wrong but i think the I4 tranny is the same as the E153 tranny in the V6, assisde from a few pieces. the swap is actually cheaper than the V6 swap cuz the I4 parts are easier to find.

the solara and the camry both have the same manual tranny, but there may be more.

Cool

It depends entirely on the exact transmission you talk about. There are over a dozen varryations of what is pretty much considered just 4 transmissions.
The 3s-gte's E153 can be used if the linkage is swapped. Keep in mind the differential, and gearing are different than the transmission actually mated to the v6's. It will cause alot more frequent shifting. Keep that in mind...

AFA any of the S transmissions. Yes you can mate them. If Toyota thought the S transmissions could hold 150ft-lbs of torque, they would have never created the E51 for the 4a-gze, or the E52 for the 2vz-fe. There is no question if an S family transmission can tolerate the torque output of a v6 for more than a short term basis. It's been done several times before, it's yet to work long-term...

so your saying if one would want an e153 tranny that if one gets one from an 3s-gte that the gearing would be better suited for the camry's i4 than the v6's e153 tranny?

^ yes in the fact that the gears are shorter

the v6 e153s were designed for an engine with a much wider powerband

hmm.... interesting maybe it was a good idea on holding out for a manual swap till way later than...could swap out for an e153 from an 3s-gte and be ok with it on the 5sfe and if I feel like moving on with the camry do a 3s-gte swap and be ready for it. Thanks for confirmation.
