3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Is there anyway to change the mileage on the gauge cluster for the 3rd Gen Camry? Reason I'm asking is because I am replacing my gauge cluster and would like to change the mileage on the new one so it's the same.

If you physically crack open the cluster, I'm sure you can get to the counters, but I don't know if anyone's done that.
The tachometer reading will be different between the I4 cluster and the V6 cluster. Swapping one into the other will throw your tach readings all over the place, but it shouldn't affect your speedo.

I feel like saying you can, because when I was changing my cluster lights, there were screws holding the front cover on, and I think i've seen people take the backing off.
You may be able to just take the clear front cover off and then see if you can turn them to your previous mileage.
i wouldnt attempt it. the counters are VERY tamper resistant. i would consult the dealer on this matter.
Right because the dealer is going to show you how to do something illegal... I think not.
Just crack it open and see if you can get to it. If it works, it works. If it doesn't... well the mileage on it isn't representative of what you have right now anyways so you don't really have much to lose.

if you open it and change it by hand, the general concensus is that you will never get the numbers to fully align again, and they will always be a little bit off, showing the fact that the cluster's been tampered with...
and on that note, are you doing the 5spd swap at the same time as your "other project"?
if you are, I presume it's because you also want the 5spd cluster?

Yea I actually have a 5-speed cluster but I'm not sure if its from an I4 or v6 and the cluster shows 257,000 miles on it. Seems like nobody has really attempted to change the mileage so I'll just mess around with one of my spare clusters and let you guys know if I figure something out.

im not sure...could you remove just the speedo, and odomoter set up, and transfer it to another cluster?

i wasnt saying to consult the dealer on tampering with the mileage. the dealer should know of a reputable speedometer shop that can bring the cluster's odometer up to your current mileage.
you just need another cluster... and it has to be from the v6... which means... you cant get a gauge cluster from a standard tranny car because they didnt make them this way... you have to use the v6 auto.
