ok I am new to toyota cars. I have tried searching the forums but had no luck. I have a 99 camry LE with the premium sound. The double bin head unit with tweeters. The rear speakers do not produce any sound. Is there a fuse for this sort of thing or is the built in amp behind the passenger side kick pannel fried? I have checked voltage to the rear speakers with a voltometer while the sterio is playing, and I get none. I have also tried testing the speakers with a 9volt battery to see if I can speaker movement/responce, but I get none as well. I know a 9volt will not give me sound, but should'nt it make poping sounds when I connect and disconnect the battery several times very quickly. I plan on installing an aftermarket head unit soon. I also plan to bypass the factory amp. I guess I just want to know if I need to get new rear speakers before I invest money for a new head unit. How should I go about testing the speakers? any advise would help
thank you
Are the wires running to the rear speakers connected?....that could be your problem, make suure everything is connected...if they are, check the connections on the car radio ( if you installed it yourself ) if they are properly connected. If all the above is fine...i dont know what to tell you.

you know, I've been having the same problem recently. My front speakers produce sound, but my rear speakers don't. I just assumed that it was a bad ground somewhere or a loose connection on the head. I haven't had time to fix it yet, but it's odd that both speakers would go out at the same time if they were bad.
Look at the speakers from the trunk and make sure that everything looks ok.
thanks for the reply. all wires are connected. we bought the car used but the reciver/head unit is the stock factory installed system. I do not recall if the rear spearkers worked when we bought it. I discovered that the rear speakers were not working when someone in the back wanted louder music than the driver prefered after messing with the fade. NO, the fader is not set all the way to the front speakers. could the stock head unit have failed and not be sending rear speaker signal to the amp?
My speakers worked up until a few months ago, but there are other issues that compliment my problem. I'd go to a pawn shop or something a pick up a cheap speaker to test it. If everything is connected properly, no shorts or bad grounds, then it's gotta be the original speaker.
ok just installed a new HD radio and I thought that I was supposed to bypass the factory amp. insted, crutchfeild sent me a wire harness that plugs into the ones the stock radio were plugged in to. Is there a differnt set of harnesses that I should be using? Because my rear speakers still are nopt getting any signal. Do factory amps go bad like that, just the rear speakers stop working?
I had a similar problem in my 2001 camry a couple months ago and I also have the premium sound package. Both rear speakers stopped working at the same time but I could still hear the tweeters making sound. I took it into the dealership and at first, they thought it was the amplifier causing the problem. They ordered the part, a week later, they put the new amp in and still did not fix the problem. Then they decided to swap out the factory headunit. Another week went by, they installed the new headunit and still no luck. Then they finally decided to change the rear speakers... and that finally solved the problem. Took them over 3 weeks to figure out the problem... I still don't understand why they didn't just try changing the speakers in the first place. (luckily all of this was still covered under extended warranty )
I'd get new speakers if I were you.
