3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, I bought an air intake off of ebay (yeah I know, very funny...). Anyway, I installed the whole thing by myself, and I'm mostly impressed with the results. More hp and better response? Oh yeah!
There's a small problem, though. I know that all cold air intakes make some suction sounds, but this one seems kinda louder than normal. Yes, I did check fittings and the hose clamps and they seem tight enough.
Probably at least of the people on this forum have an intake on their gen 3 camry (I have a '92), so could somebody give me suggestions?
First off which engine? If you dont have any hoses left open, you might just not be used to the new sound it makes, it took me a while to get used to my CAI on the Camry.

a short ram is gonna make more noise than a CAI. alot of the sound depends on the shape, thickness and make of the tubing and filter, an audio clip would help pinpoint if its somthing wrong.
I'll try to put up an audio clip and maybe a pic soon.
The intake has an extra nipple on it for a vacuum line. I don't think my '92 is equipped with a vacuum line though, because I couldn't find one. I covered over the nipple with the protective rubber cap that came with it. I don't know if any of that info helped...
the other thing to note is that that "suction" sound is much louder at startup and cold idle and will dicipate as engine temp rises. that clip will help
^Yep, same thing happens on my V6. On cold startups the intake is really loud, but as soon as the engine warms up you can barely hear it. Chances are everything is normal, it just takes some time to get use to.

Maybe it is running correctly. It's loud during cold starts, but once it warms up, I can barely hear it.
