4th Generation A/C not working...need help

I was driving on the freeway on a nice hot day today and turned on my A/C.

As a result, it didn't work. The A/C light doesn't even turn on, but what comes out of the vents is very warm air instead. I turned the temp knob all the way to "hot" and hot air came out as usual.

All of my fluids are okay. Maybe this issue is because I haven't used my A/C for months due to the winter season? Any help is appreciated; I'm not that knowledgeable about the A/C components. I'd also like to know about the cost of repairing what needs to be done.

I tried searching here and got no leads. My car is a '00 Camry 4cyl auto, LE.

If anything, I'd say that the on/off button is broken, and the entire system doesn't even turn on because of that. The fans will still blow air, even when the A/C is off, hence the warm air.

There are a lot more reasons the AC system wont turn on than a broken switch.

If you're the DIY type, the first thing you can do is check the fuses. If fueses are fine, purchase a refrigerant gauge at an autoparts store and check the low side pressure when off and when running (or trying to run). You should be near 100 psi static and around 25-30 psi running. If the pressure is too low, the compressor (and also the green light on the dash) won't even turn on.

If the pressure is fine but the system still doesn't turn on, your problem is likely electrical, and thus you will need to contact a voodoo priest wise in the way of electrics.

sounds to me like your a/c gas has leaked out. meaning that apart from a re-gas, you'll have to have the system checked for leaks and have the leaking seals replaced.

the a/c system has oil in it apart from gas, this is to lubricate the seals you have in the system. when you don't use the system for a long time, these seals don't get any lubrication and they dry out... that's when gas and oil starts leaking through them.

you can't really find any leaks unless you re-gas it first, then you might see some oil leaking out through some of the fittings. if visible.
