Question about install remote starter, please help..
Hi All
I am going to intall the remote starter on my 97 Camry. But I still have couple questions about wiring... Any one can help?
1. Anti-Grind/Starter Kill, Any one knows do I have to use that wire? i don't have those anti-theft system on my car.
2. Any better place to connect the Tach Detection wire? I know it located beside the coil or ECM. But still seems to far from the dash. If I connect to the wire beside the coil, I have to go through the firewall. Then the next quesiton is where is the best place to pass through the wire?
3. The hood pin, where is the best place? same question like question 2, how to run the wire through the firewall?
FireFire, that relay they are talking about is something that comes with the remote starter, or at least it should. What brand remote starter are you installing? All the wiring to the anti-grind/starter kill relay is external from the "car wiring." Usually there is a black plastic plug that the relay plugs into, with wires already attached. They should be colored to match your directions.
This isn't somthing you have to hook up. All it does is keep you from starting the car a second time while the car is already running in the remote start mode. Example: You remote start the car. Now it is running off the remote starter which is completing the circuit you key normally would. Now you get into the car and put the key in. At this point all you need to do is turn it to ON, if you turned it to START then the starter would turn, which you don't want to do when the engine is already running. By having the relay in the ciruit coming from you key it will prevent this. The relay opens the key ciruit, so if you do turn it to START the power from the key doesn't go any where, it is like a dead end. Then once you turn off the remote start, usually be pressing the brake pedal, the car will be running on the key, if you have it in and in the ON position. At this point once the remote starter is off the relay turns off and reconnects the key circuit just like it normally is in the stock form before you added the relay.
It is very easy to add, but it isn't needed. Basically when you add it, you are cutting the wire going from the key to the starter motor. The relay is like a second switch in line (series) with the key (which is also a switch).
I tried to be basic I hope this helps and make sense. I will also get a picture of how I put the hood pin switch in my car. As far as getting through the fire wall. Just find a large rubber boot, like the one the gas pedal cable goes through, and poke a small hole in it off to the side with something sharp, and run your wire through that. You shouldn't need to hook up the tach wire if the unit you are installing has a voltage sensing feature. Read into it.
I understand the first part. Your explanation is very clear.
The tach wire is the second problem. The one I got is called "ULTRA STARTER 1270", from www.ultrastarters.com, the dealer says it same as the Viper... I have no idea if it's true or not. But I don't think it come with the voltage sensing feature. I am going to run that cable from the ECM which behind the glove box. Then I have to figure it out how to fly that cable over...
I post the pic here...
I think I need to connect PIN 1 2 3 4 6 on the up connector. And PIN 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 for the lower connector... Two more pin on other connector about door lock and unlock. Am I right?
FireFire, sorry I didn't get a chance to tonight. My install is on my wifes car, and she wasn't home in time for me to get a few pics. But I will get them up here for you. I will also get you some more info for wiring that should help. I just don't have the time tonight, I'm just letting you know I didn't forget about your question. Check back friday night.

Hey firefire, could you please tell me where you got the right tach signal from? I have a 1997 I4 automatic Camry too, and bought the same remote starter system you did from eBay. But I cannot find a tach signal (everything else works). I have connected to the tach wire (black with orange stripe) coming from the ECM behind the glovebox (did not work) and have now tried one of the fuel injector wires (I read they can work many times but it did not). I am about ready to take out the instrument panel and find it there. I wondered if you would please tell me your experiences with this. Thanks so much for anything you can give me.
