3rd Generation 94 Camry Overheating PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello all,

I cut and pasted this from another website that I posted on, just FYI, since that forum only 1 person replied on.

Hello all,

I've come here for advice. Today my camry started overheating. Upon inspection I see coolant boiling over from my coolant resivor. I visibly see no coolant leak. I have to wait 15 minutes to let the engine cool down and then drive 3 miles and then cool down again. So it took me 1 and 1/2 hour for me to get home today even tho I live 30mins away. When I got home I opened up the radiator cap and coolant gushed everywhere. The coolant color is brown, which I know is not good. So I added new coolant in. I'm gonna see tomorrow morning if it still overheats with the new coolant.

Also, I noticed both of my radiator fans are not automatically turning on. Based on the pdf repair manual I got from here, I disconnected the engine coolant temp. switch plug. That is what made the fans turn on. So I am assuming that I have a faulting coolant tempurature switch???

Update,

This morning I turned on the a/c to see if the fans turned on, and it did. I also ran it for 3 minutes because I didn't have time cuz I had to get to work. It did not overheat but I don't think there was enough time to. I've got answers from other forums saying its either the thermostat or the engine coolant tempurature switch. Once I get home, I will drive it to see if it overheats.

Update:

It now overheats quickly if I turn on the A/C. When I turn on the A/C, I hear a clicking noise coming from the passenger side front wheel well. I know this is where the waterpump is located. I am now thinking that I have a bad waterpump. Comment or thoughts anyone?

Hey any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks all!

Been a while but I think this still holds true. With engine cool, remove rad cap. (Don't want you getting burned) Start engine. Within 10-15 minutes the t-stat should open and you'll see coolant moving thru the radiator. If not then either the t-stat is stuck shut or your water pump isn't pumping. T-stats are fairly easy and cheap, the pump is a major b**** IMHO.

dealt with this

had the same symptoms

thought it was the headgasket and was looking at new motors

I took down the timing cover after changing the stat

the bearing on the pump had frozen and the pump was not working

the timing belt was slippiing over it and slowing the whole car down

changed belt and pump and it was perfect

NOW the fan doesnt seem to turn on.. Jumping it does nothing.

Dave,

Thanks for that. That is what I did after work today. I did not see coolant moving but it was not filled all the way up where I can see it. I've taken it to the shop so I just hope I don't need a new motor or $2,500.

Untouchable,

So it was your gasket? You still got the car? How did u fix it?

Thanks for the comments.
