Ignition Timing Question - 3VZ-FE

Hey guys,

I just wanna make sure I set the timing properly. I set the notch on the crankshaft pulley to match the 0 on the guide (right above the pulley). The guide seems to go from -5 all the way to 15.

I jumped the TE1 to E1 and made sure the engine was warm. I also used the ignition wire on the front-right (the cylinder closest to the battery). The RPMs where hovering around 700-800.

BTW - I set the ignition timing to 10 on the guide but it ran pretty bad and had bad ping under light load.

Car Details:
1992 ES300
3VZ-FE / 5-speed manual

Thanks,
MarkE

Cool

Nope, gotta use the #1 spark plug, unless you want to do some math & make a gigantic gauge for the pulley.

Passanger most, firewall side is #1. It should read 10*btdc when you jump it. When you get it set to 10*btdc, you can run it up to 15*btdc for acouple extra horsepower & some throttle responce.

Hey there Toys

Dammit...I can't find the dang notch when the clip is on that cylinder. You know what direction I should turn the distributor (facing the passenger side)? Clockwise?

Thanks,

MarkE

Cool

the dizzy has a notch on it, line it up with the notch on the valve cover. if the valvetrain is in alignment, that should be quite close to 10*btdc

Cool Problem Solved

Just for search purposes, I have solved the problem.

It turns out that the Harmonic Balancer was bad (the rubber thing in the middle was coming apart) and the timing notch moved over 200* from spec even though the timing was correct.

As a side note, I went to Toyota to get a quote and the part would've cost me $400 so I went to Autozone to get the part for 1/4 the price. My car is now set to ~13* BTDC.

Thanks for the replies Toys.

so, just to make sure as I am having trouble setting the timing as per Haynes manual because of its inaccuracies but with terminal E1 and TE1 jumped, you should set the timing to 10* BTDC
my girlfriend doesnt desire more HP so I dont need to set it at 15* BTDC
