4th Generation Does your shift place lit up???

Does anyone Gen4 camry shift light.. the P R N D 2 1 place have the lights turned on? I didn't notice until now and I'm not even sure if it lit up before when i bought it. I was just wondering IF it is suppose to lit up when i turn on the lights? and If yes, is it easy to change the bulb underneath the plate? Could I just pop it up with a flat head driver?

Are you talking about where the shifter is than I don't think so, but as far as the instrument panel than yes the letter lights up and has a small square around it.

Hope that helps

On my 2000 LE, that area on the shift console lift up. Recently, it's been hit or miss. If I hit it, it will turn on. I'm sure it's just a bad connetion, but I'm just to lazy to look. I don't know if it is the same in the 1997 model. Seems like it should be.

On my '92 and '01 the center console PANEL lights but the gear indication does not (and never did). I've actually owned another '92 (purchased new) and a '93 and they were all this way. Gear indication is in the dash and these burn out or often become hit and miss which I believe is due to a switch connected to the shifter somewhere. I've never been that concerned to go looking as I just look to see where the lever is on the console if needed.

the shifter light near the gear should lit up when you turn on the driving lights. other than that it doesnt. if you need to replace the bulb, its quite simple. there's a DIY on TN (just search).

Hope i've answered your question
