Tach shows too slow (shows 1k when turning 3500)

Anyone seen a tach that 'works' but shows too slow of a reading?

This thing shows 1,000 RPM when the engine is turning 3500.

Car works fine in every other way but this.

It goes up and down with the motor. but it does not move much.

If this is an aftermarket tach, it may be set to the wrong number of cylinders.

No, this tach is stock.
Don't know the history of the car too well, but it is a 92 I4 auto.
It might be the tach itself, cause it stopped working totally this morning...

Ok, get one from the junkyard or ebay, or egen the For Sale section here on the forum, and swap it. Just the tach, not the rest of the unit. Each guage is a seperate unit and can be changed individually.

You need to use one from a 1992-1994 I4 Camry.

I just want to make sure first. Do you have any Check Engine Lights (CEL) on?

Any chance it has something like reverse-glow gauges? I put those on my mom's car (when I drove it) a few years ago and due to the heat, it started lifting from the face of the gauges. The tach and speedo eventually couldn't move correctly. Soooo.. I had to bribe my cousin to help me take the dash apart again to remove them

But -- it worked out okay cause the O/D light was out so we swapped out the tiny bulb from a blank spot on that strip of gear indicator lights. Minor annoyance but it was great to have it working again!

Thanks for the idea, but no. Dash is just like it rolled from the factory.

You know, you bring up a good point about the guages.

I thought of that myself (using the double sided tape that is so thick).

I have a plan to put the blue glow guage faces into another car...and will be using glue instead of the tape.
