3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
When I first got my car, a few tires bounced when going over bumps. I brought it to the shop and they said that the strut was blown, and almost all of the oil had leaked out. So they replaced the front passenger side strut and mount, as well as both rears (a couple months ago). Well recently I've noticed that the rear passenger side is starting bounce a bit and vibrate. It's nowhere near as bad as it was before, but after getting it repaired I shouldnt have any bouncing.
They were replaced with KYB's and have a lifetime warranty. So my question is, is it likely that the strut is damaged, or is it another part of the suspension thats making it vibrate and bounce slightly? I checked and didnt see any oil leaking out of the strut.
Are they big bumps or almost flat road?
I notice some kind of bouncing on the side where my car got hit and it my car pulls unusually hard (when braking) considering my car has been properly aligned (front end) and the frame on the front was practically replaced dead on +/- 1/4"
Whenever I go over a bumb, you can feel a slight vibration coming from the rear tire area, it sounds/feels exactly like it did before I got the struts replaced.
they only changed 3 struts and changed them to kyb's?
id assume that if you feel it in the steering it may be the front that wasnt changed but the best way to figure it out is bring it to the shop that you had the work done and have them put it on a lift and see what it looks like underneath you never know maybe one of the replacement struts is garbage you know?

if ur springs are worn they will also cause vibration and boncing but its most likly the the fualt of the strut. i personally dont like KYBs, there made kinda cheap.

I had them change the front passenger one first, since that was the only one that was bouncing, and then I changed the rears a few months later because those were bouncing.
But the KYB's have a lifetime warranty, so if it is a problem with the strut, I should be able to have it replaced for free (maybe minus labor, idk).
maybe im a tad dense this afternoon but i dont quite get this tire bounce issue you've described. When i think of tire bounce, i am reminded of the older, lighter vehicles i've seen on the highways where the rear tires are bouncing up and down, typically due to very poor balance and severely uneven tire wear. Or another bouncing due to ricers wanting to lower their car by simply cutting the oem springs.
I've driven cars with blown struts where the car is literally sagging and will have little to no response when going over bumps, but never have i experienced tire bounce.
I assume you got the KYB Gr-2 struts? Those are OEM type replacement struts (i have them myself) and havent had issues yet.
When I say "bouncing", I dont mean it literally coming off the ground completely, but that exactly what it sounds like. It doesnt sag or anything, so it is possible it's something else...
mmm still don't get it but i hope you get it fixed.
Im surprised ur labor isnt warrantied for at least 90 days. most reputable shops have that.
take it in and see if they can replicate the results.
i cant recall if u have performance springs or not but ive herd and have had some evidence to back it up, but ive herd that KYBs do not like long travel and that it wears them out faster. a buddy of mine had them on his car and they did the same thing. the rep told him that it was because he selected a shock that was designed for lower distances of travel that u get with a lowered car. again this is what ive herd so im not sure on weather its true or not.
im leaning more towards this being a tire balance issue. on perfectly flat roads the tire can ride smooth, but if you hit a bump and the tire is off balance, it will bounce around. if this wheel bounce isnt happening on the front of your car, try rotating the back tires to the front and see if the boucing sensation chanaged.
The tires are worn evenly on the backs, and it's only the passenger side rear so it doesnt seem like a tire/wheel issue. If it gets much worse then i'll just bring it back andn have the mechanic look at it.
