No cold air intake box, No problem?

Is it damaging to run ur camry without the air intake box? someone said that adding a cold air intake is good, then they said, but if you take the air intake box out, no problem? I was messing around and unhooked it today cause had to get to the coolant piping...and i fired up my car and it sounded pretty much like that of having a aftermarket cold air intake on it.

Any input would be appreciated...

I'm sure it's fine as long as the air is filtered one way or another.

It wouldn't be, when I read your post earlier I thought you were referring to removing the airbox and then installing an aftermarket CAI with a filter on the end. I'd say don't do it without a filter, but there are plenty of guys around here that are more knowledgable that might tell you otherwise.

gete a short piece of 3" diameter tubing(pvc, aluminum ,whatever), abotu 4-8" long and then get a 3" cone filter and there ya go. install the tubing and airfilter after the MAF sensor. clamp it all down and as long as any vacume hoses and sensors are still plugged up, ull be fine. you can also just cut out the bottom of ur air box and that would do the same but its a little more gehtto then the latter.

no its not. unless u have a filter ull end up sucking all kinds of crap in the engine and it will sooner then later screw somthing up. ull also need all ur sensors and vacume lines(if any) if u want the car to drive right.

Cool

Eventually you'll get worn pistons, cylinder walls & rings because of the super fine dust, sand, etc that is sucked in the engine.

couldnt u technically leave all the stock tubes and whatnot and just take the box off ... and put an aftermarket filter in place of the box?

how would that be different from a SRI? and is there any way to do this easily?

don't get dirty!

You can't drive for long without a filter. You're going to mess up your cylinders by getting specks of dirt in there....water too

Don't freak the guy out lol, its not like it's going to happen instantly. Maybe if he ran it with no filter for like a month. You know I haven't checked that cone filter I've had on my Camry in like... 4 years, maybe it's time to see if I can still see light through it

As for cheap horsepower, which engine? The v6 has a few things you can do but the 4 cyl... yeah dont bother haha

Hey Venom... yes... you could do that. It's not a bad idea actually. Only issue you might run into is simply a "will it fit" issue. No big deal, but you might have to cut the tube that goes into the factory air box (i believe most factory airboxes are a one peice item, and not sections like some aftermarket CAI), and find a filter that would fit. Also, the thing that makes an Intake a "cold air" intake is simply it's location. Cold Air Intakes are make/model specific, and designed to put the filter in a spot that gets high air flow and is further away from the heat of your engine.

If you just replaced the airbox with a filter, you'd get better airflow...but it'd still just be a short ram intake. Still worth it in my mind.

One final note: If you've got a truck, and you do some off roading, make sure your filter has a shield on it that will block any water/mud splashing from below the truck. You don't want to get too much water in your cylinders. For street cars, just watch out for deep puddles. Same reason.

Hope this helps.
