Transmission question

I just replaced a damaged transmission in my 92 Camry 4 cylinder. Everything went in no problem. On the axle side of the transmission I found a wire to plug in but the sensor is missing from the replacement transmission. It's a two conductor plug. I looked at the original transmission and sure enough there is a round sensor on the side with wires that the replacement does not have. What does this sensor do and will the car run without it. I though all Gen 3 transmissions were interchangeable?

There could be some minor differences between the transmissions. Can you post a photo of the old part or describe more accurately its location, what color wires lead to it? Suggest downloading the trans info from the link below and locating all the parts that are wired to the harness.

Sorry don't have a camera. The sensor is a round device located near the grease shield for the drivers side axle. On the old transmission there is a bracket that holds it into the trans. The new transmission doesn't even have the hole. I've look thru the transmission manual and was not able to see the connector. Any more ideas?
