1992 Camry V6. Wont start in the rain.

Hey guys i got a 1992 camry xle v6. I just replaced the battery and alternator last week. Cars been fine but it rained last nite into today and now the car wont start. The car practically NEVER starts in the rain. Any ideas what it could be? Could the car use a tune up?

Thanks for any help in advance.

im not so sure a simple tune-up will solve the problem

water can hurt the air filter / air intake system ... the alternator & starter ... or the distributor cap - however, these usually arent exposed to just rain, you would have to try to get the parts wet in order for them to hurt

does your car try to start and nothing happens? (you hear the starting noise repeatedly) ... or does the ignition not even begin to start?

Are you able to go out a few hours after it had rained and start your car? Sort of sounds like you're getting moisture in some part of your ignition system. Now, I don't think your car has a distributor, but there might be other areas that if there's a slight crack, perhaps moisture can get in a give you trouble (coils perhaps?)

call me a noob, but what would the fact of it not starting in the rain only have to do with that? Is it because theres alot more moisture when it's raining out?

Water is an insulator of electricity. The water & vapor gets inside the distributor cap, and the spark can't jump the air gap between the rotor, and the distirbutor cap.

When did they stop using a distributor on the v6? For some reason I thought that they've been coil packs for awhile. Good explanation Toysrme

Cool

The bolts to remove the dizzy cap are i think 8mm / phillips screw driver.
You should change it youself. About $15-20.

'94 1mz was coil on plug (6 coils). Afterwards was wasted spark (3 coils.)

I got a really good mechanic right down the hill from me, he usually gives me good prices ($150 for the alternator part and installed in under an hour, my friend got ripped off $450 for battery and alternator) The only problem is he is Korean and its very difficult to communicate with him, which is why he cant diagnose problems for me. I ususally point to the part and say "Out!" lol. So could someone show me a pic or tell me where the cap and rotor is located under the hood.

Thanks a ton guys = )
