Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well today i took my friend home, and he told the the car was running rich, he smelled the exhaust smelled like pure gasoline, he said the O2 was gone...Is he right or can it be something else?

It can be many other things if the car is actually running too rich. It can be a defective ECT sensor (engine coolant temperature sensor), a thermostat stuck in the open position, defective fuel pressure regulator, leaking fuel injectors, or a bad ECU, just to name a few. You can't just guess O2 sensor. You really need to do some diagnostic work here. Start by checking for engine trouble codes. Your picture looks like a 97-99 Camry, so your car should be OBD2. That means you can take the car to Autozone and they will check for codes for free.
I'm a bit shady on emmisions systems, but here is my $.02. Maybe its possible the EGR system is staying open beyond normal operation and pumping excessive dirty air back into the engine. As a result, poor combustion, and voila, you smell gas out the ass end of the car. Is the car missing at all?
I'm so tempted to make a Sex Panther (Anchorman) joke right now. Now whenever someone gets into your car and asks what the smell is, just say "Thats the smell of desire M'lady."
Sorry, just had to. Good luck with your problem.

Hmmm. Sensor in the EGR system is supposed to keep it closed below 55 Celcius. If its staying open I'd assume the car would miss a little, and possible produce the smell. I assume engine feels (and smells) normal while driving, right? Again, good luck.

if that happens on cold start only then its normal. on my, when cold starts it automatcially goes up to about 1800 rpms and as the engines warms up its goes down. once warmed up its go about 700-800 rpms. just my two cents.
is the coolant temp sensor (3sfe) on the front drivers side of the mill, near the top of the cylinder head?
As you are standing in front of the engine, it's on coolant port coming out of the right side of the cylinder head. It is the sensor under the green plastic connector.
bkack95cam its ok for the thread jack, but while we're on the topic of exhaust system...theres a stinky smell ( rotten eggs ) everytime i accelerate i just want to make sure that its the catalytic converter? It really getting on my nerves
