96' Camry won't stay running ...

My better half's 96' Camry (4cyl) starts up just fine if you stay on the gas (2k-3k rpms), but if you let off the gas the car just dies ... It's done it in the past, but has always gone away after a couple seconds of keeping the rpm's up ... Any thought's?

iac (idle air control) valve gets sticky from carbon build up. It has to be cleaned or replaced. One technique of cleaning can be done by just removing intake hose and squirting throttle body cleaner into the square hole located on the lower portion of the throttle body intake area. Also clean air control flap while your at it. Then put everything back and start car. It will hesitate for half a minute, but push the pedal until it clears up. If that does not work you have to remove throttle body and get to IAC valve. Remove it and supply 12v to the terminals and see if valve is functional, also check resistance. You will need a manual to do this right. If everything checks out right you will be able to clean that valve directly while it is in your hand (best way). If that doesn't do the job, it may have to be replaced. I've seen those valves test out fine but function weakly, compared to a new one. Good luck.

The only thing that would make this site better is if someone actually came over to my house to do the work ... ... Honestly though, searched on the IAC valve and found this wonderful gem of a thread http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t158097.html ... Went home for lunch and fired it up ... Still stalling out, so I douched the IAC valve area and TB, came out of the house 15minutes later and it runs like a top ...
