4th Generation How hubcentric rim works?

Got a few questions regarding hubcentric rims. Am using 98 oem steel rims now and wanting to upgrade to aftermarket rims. The rear orm steel rim fits around the center hub hence the term hubcentric. When you put aftermarket rims. These are normally non-hubcentric. How does it work then? It just held on by the 5 studs and nuts without the hub to center it?

Will purchase a set of rims soon. Just wondering how these things work. Already check the "Lets talk offsets" thread. Found alot of info regarding rim width, offset and tire width that would work with our gen4. The only info I need is the one I'm asking now. Thanks in advance.

You need to find out the center bore of the aftermarket wheel. Then you'll need to get a set of hub rings which will have the OD of the aftermarket wheel center bore and ID equal to the size of the hub on your car. They are not required, but highly recommended so that the wheels are centered properly to minimize vibration.

4th Generation

Thanks Touringcamry. I'm looking at the people who installed IS 300 rims to their camrys, especially the gen 4 body. I'm almost the owner of a set of 17x7 50 mm offset rims. They are taken from a Suzuki vehicle. The center bore and bolt pattern are the same as Toyota which was a big surprise to me. My only dilemma is the rear wheel which alot of gen4 owners with the I4 have rubbing issues. A few don't. As for tires, I only have Goodyears to go with and 215/50/17 is the only size I can find in the model that I want. This size was one of the prone sizes to the rubbing issue. Anyway, I think kocho and a few others went with spacers for their setup and I'm waiting for mine as well. Its not the H&R brand with the extra stud bolts but just the 5mm spacers. Hopefully, even with the spacers, the rim will sit properly although 5 mm is pushing the rim out of the center hub. Anyway, thanks for the input.

If anybody wants to chime in about what they have experienced or just their 2 cents, please do.

On my 2000 Camry I had 17x7 rims with 40mm offset and I put 215/50-17 tires on them. They were ASA EM9 Tirerack. I think they rubbed the strut a little bit in the back sometimes because I noticed clean or shiny spots on my struts when I rotated the tires. The entire strut would be matte black but there would be some clean spots where I assumed the tires rubbed.

When the car was sitting on the ground, I was barely able to put the very tip of my thumb between tire and the strut. So clearance was maybe 5mm between the strut and top of the tire. My guess is that when turning, perhaps turning hard, or if I hit a bump, the tire would touch the strut for a moment.
