3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have cleaned the throttle body and completed a total tune up. I still have and have always had a bit of vibration @ idle when sitting stopped in D. I realize that the 2.2L is known to have this condition and my question is does anyone produce better motor mounts that would solve this vibration. Looking back, now I know why the Altama commercials had champagne glasses on their auto hood and bragged about liquid filled motor mounts.

most aftermarket motor mounts are not advertised as being hydraulic-filled, like the oem ones. I had a horrible vibration at idle in drive until I did the following things:
1) Checked the timing. My timing was a couple of degrees off. I adjusted it and my idle at drive went up a little, a little less vibration.
2) Noticed my dogbone mount was cracked, replaced it. A little less vibration. While I was at it, I recalled that I kinda twisted my tranny mount when I put the engine back in, so I changed it out as well.
3) Since I still felt like I had too much vibration, I broke down and replaced my rear engine mount. I specifically looked around and found a seller on ebay that had the hydraulic-filled mount. I payed about 70 bucks shipped for it, and it took me less than an hour to install myself.
After those three things. the first one was free, the last two combined probably cost me $150.00 and two hours of my free time, I think I eliminated all the vibration that I can. It's much better now, and sitting in a co-workers 2001 camry, my vibration in drive isn't much worse than his, so with that in mind, I didn't feel that I needed to replace anything else.
All in all, if you are going to do the motor mount replacement route, look for the hydraulic filled mounts. They cost more, but you'll notice the difference.

A little bit of vibration in drive, at idle, for the generation 3 5SFE 2.2 liter engine is normal. I am the original owner of a 94 Camry with the 2.2 liter 5SFE engine and I can tell you that my car has done this since new. So did all the other new 94 5SFE engines I had the dealer show me.

Do you keep this in a word document, so all you need to do is cut-and-paste when someone has this question?
I'd really hate to see what the vibration is like on one of these engines w/o the balance shaft assembly, though. I considered taking mine out when I put the engine back together, now I'm glad I didn't.
