3rd & 4th Generation (19921996 & 19972001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hmm... well heres the deal:
I recently acquired a beautifully kept 2001 Camry LE V6 auto. The car is great, and with a few tricks (click shifting) it can move pretty quickly. However, I know it can perform far greater. Not only that, but I see a great deal of potential in this car as far as looks. So I have some questions.
2001, the TRD body kit needs "minor modifications" to fit this car. In about a month, im going to buy that body kit, and am VERY interested as to what these modifications are. Are they hard, or do I need a shop to do them for me? Is it just minor stuff like drilling in new holes for bolts?
There is actually a TRD supercharger for the Camry. Is it any good? I found one for about 3500. On the V6 Auto, will this fit, and if it does will it add any benefit besides saying "I have a supercharged camry"?
18" TRD rims, will these fit? I would probably have to push in (roll) the fenders, right? Would perhaps 16" or 17" look better? I believe my current rims are the stock 15", and arent even really rims. They are hubcaps, and these gotta go. So I was thinking 18" if they fit.
Any recomendations? Yes, im sticking to TRD because Toyota will service it and perhaps install for a lower price. I would prefer as I mentioned those parts, I just want those few questions answered first.
Lastly, any pictures with any of the aforementioned things? Particuraly the body kit, I have seen a few beautiful shots, but need to see more before making my final decision. My car is the blue, if anyone has a shot of their blue body kit, im interested, but im probably just going to paint my car anyways. Also, I REALLY want to see if anyone has the 18" rims, and if anyone has experience with the TRD supercharger.
Those are the rims im talking about. They may be for the Solara, but its all the same. I think they are nice loking rims.
Seriously thanks to anyone who has any help, pictures are most appreciated. Im really dreading the look for a body kit... I know I wont find one in my color, if any, which means I have to paint it. I dont know of any local shops that even offer color matched paint for just a certain part.
Edit: sorry about length. contrary to popular belief, im not a noob at this. The camry is just an interesting car, as you dont see many modded, and there arent many resources to find out many questions. Sorry if im being bothersome. Ironically I have one last question... on the corner of the headlight, the turn signal/parking light part, if I can manage to open this piece, does the orange reflector just pop out? I want to go for white headlights, and cant find clear corners to purchase, so they must be DIY... thanks
well the supercharger is good not great as far as out put is concerned. they are built very well and with a different pulley u can up the psi and get some pretty descent power out of her, say 280 hp and close to 300 tq i think someone got with a 8 psi pulley(numbers may be off). the supercharger was built for the 97-01 1mz(what u have) and is a direct bolt on, though it wouldnt hurt to upgrade the fuel pump and injectors if u plan on upping the psi. and dont forget teh A/F ratio.
as far as the wheels go id get whatever u like, weight is the big issure and i believe that what ud pay for TRD wheels u could get somthing lighter and cheaper for the same money.
there is a trd kit in the for sale section for 550 bucks right now, I would grab it up if I were you... they get harder and harder to find by the day.
Im guessing those TRD rims would fit your car, but youre going to need to figure out the offset and all that jazz to know for sure. If youre going to upgrade to 18" rims, you really need to lower the car first or else it is going to look really bad. Personally, the first things on my list if I were you would be struts, springs, and the lip kit. That would get you off to a great start, then grab wheels and tires later.
Hm, yeah thanks. I may have forgot to mention after I got the body kit, I would lower it and get new rims at the same time. If anything, lower it right after I get rims to make sure its low enough to look decent. Im not sure how much to lower it, as for my work has fairly high speed bumps ill need to be able to clear.
There are some TRD surplus stores online, Im not entirely sure it stocks everything though. My local Toyota dealer also says they may be able to order in some parts when the time comes. If you look really hard you can find stuff.
So the supercharger is decent? Good for the money? And by just putting a new pulley on it you can run more psi? I dont mind spending the money if I know its gonna be good.
There are always a few TRD kits on ebay, but I wont be buying for probably another month. Need to pay off a little debt (security system) then ill be getting stuff for the camry.
My main concern is its still an automatic... but I have no way around that. If only the V6 manuals were more common, sigh...
Does this supercharger whine a lot? Thats one of the main things. The only TRD ive ever heard was in a Celica, and it was pretty loud; but im certain the camry and celica superchargers are going to be very different.
Also, no questions to what mods ill need to fit the TRD body kit on the 01?
the lip kit was designed for the gen4.0, which bumper curved in more. youll need to sand down a ridge along the inner edge of the front and rear lips. be sure to test fit as u sand, so that u dont cart off too much, and def paint after sanding of course.
i dunno if i was clear enough, but some other trd lip kitted gen4's i can name are Yosh, FoxPrime, JMSinMD.....hmmm yea, i think thats most of us, haha
how much did you pay for your v6 le? i got mines almost exactly 2 years ago, for $11000, at 40k miles. i wanted to SC mines too, but i decided to get another car this summer, something more boostier

Those 18s will fit, 225/40/18 tires. There is a guy on solaraguy.org selling some right now, he goes by Turbosolara, let him know Milt sent you.
Also, I have had experience with the Charger, PLEASE, don't foget to do fuel mods, and relocate the knock sensor (for that search for gLok). 4psi is nice but 7 are nicer!!! HAHA

Got the car brand new back in 2001 for 22,000. Recently it was handed down to me, and I want to make it mine. Its going to take a few years (unless I get a raise... ha!) to get everything I want, but first up is a new exhaust. Lowering it is next, followed by rims, then a body kit. The only problem is like you said, the body kits were designed for the pre-2000 camrys, which makes it hard to fit them. Im going to Toyota today to see if they would install the body kit, as im not too fond of sanding down anything going onto my car.
My car is plenty boosty if I click shift her through the gears, and I recently started tossing premium fuel in her which does, suprisingly, make it a lot peppier, and not as much lag when you floor it.
