Engine removal questions 5SFE

I did search and I'm looking for specific information. I just purchased a 94 Camry that needs a motor. I'm starting to remove the engine and have some stuff out of the way, but have questions.

Alldata states to remove the engine and transmission as one piece and seperate later (auto). Was wondering if people in here had experience doing that, or just removing the engine seperate, and leaving the trans and axles in place.

They also state that your supposed to remove the harness with the engine, is this true as well? Looks to be as the wires are pretty hard to get to regarding the intake.

Thanks for your help, any and ALL info on swapping a motor in this would be VERY helpfull. I need to get this done ASAP. Thanks again.

I pulled a motor/trans...

a few weeks ago on a 94 Camry with a 4 cylin/auto because the transmission was shot. It was a first-timer and I pulled both at the same time...the new (used) transmission came in a few days ago so I hope to put it back in this weekend.

The hardest part was taking the wiring harness out but thanks to this forum I was able to do it. I bought the Haynes manual but if it were not for this post, WITH PHOTOS,

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t88082.html (thanks again 88LE!) I would not have been able to do it.

Once I got the harness out of the way it went smoothly. I plan to change the timing belt, idler pulleys, new seals, and add a trans cooler before I put the motor/trans back in.

This is very valuable too...http://www.**********s.com/camry/...I go to these online repair manuals now instead of the Haynes...the only time I use the Haynes is for some backup/verification.

I'll try to answer any specific questions but there are others on here that are more experienced and if you use the search feature you will probably find an answer to your question.

Thank you VERY much for the link and the post. I'm going to work on it today after work. Appreciate it. Any others want to chime in on whether to leave the trans in the car or remove at the same time? Thanks for your time people.

be sure to mark all your connections

on the wiring harness. I bought a black sharpie and a silver sharpie at Target. It will be hard to re-connect if you dont. Also get some gallon size ziplocks to keep all the parts as you remove them. You need to come up with a number/reference sytem so you will know how to put it all back together.

I also used a lot of glass cleaner and shop rags to clean the oil/grease/dirt off the connectors before I marked them...the Camry I am working on had 13 years of gunk on it. I took lots of photos with a digital camera too.

Do you have a new engine?

How do you like Alldata?

No I don't have a new engine yet, currantly in the process of trying to find one. I think I made a mistake getting this car, but hopefully it will work out. I just don't have much time and need to get it up and running.

I like alldata, it's very useful, but on import stuff it can be vague at times. I'm very used to working on Honda's, especially civics, and thought this would be a slam in slam out job. But this car is a little trickier than a civic.

haha, well this remains to be seen at the moment. Are these motors junk? I'm having problems locating one, and seeing how they're one of the best selling cars in the world, that don't make sense. I think I've made an error in purchasing this.

I found my transmission at car-part.com...specifically at the bottom of the "Search Results" there is a link that says "Or request a quote from hundreds of recyclers"...I sent my request via that link and got a reply the next day and had the trans a few days later.

The reason you're probably having a hard time locating an engine is because so many are still out on the road

When I started looking for an engine for my '95, everything I found in junkyards and pullapart places had over 150k miles. I finally found one with about 100k, then I tore it down, checked everything out, and replaced all the seals and gaskets.

the 5sfe is far from "junk"

and yes, a Camry is trickier to deal with than a Civic ... but it is a better car and far more durable

you should have more than enough resources here on the forums to succesfully swap whatever you need into your gen3

Thanks for your help guys. I may consider rebuilding this since I'm not having much luck finding a resonable replacement. I will drop the pan tonight and see what I'm dealing with.

The issue would seem to be moving the engine forward enough to disconnect the transmission input shaft. There is not a lot of room at the front of the engine; the axles prevent the trans from moving away from the engine. The engine supports the front of the trans, which would need to be supported with the engine out. Then re-bolting the trans to the engine in the car might be a pain.

Thank you, this helps a lot. There is NOT much room at all, I have noticed this as well, and having a time getting some of the bracket bolts off because of it. Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up toyomoho. I'll see how this goes. I may even sell this thing cheap if someone wants it. I just didn't plan on it being this much of a project.
