Hey guys im getting ready to do my timing belt soon so im shopping around for parts. My mechanic tells me that the gates timing belt kit is the best out there. Anybody know about it and what are your thoughts about it. Also these are the parts that im getting for my timing belt.
1. Cam Shaft seal
2. Crankshaft seal
3. Oil Pump seal
4. Oil gasket
5. Timing belt
6. Tensioners
5. Idlers
7. Water pump
Please let me know if i would need any other parts changed for my timing belt. Also any brand names that work better with toyota camry (92 4 cylinder). What is an estimate on labor for timing belt. Thanks alot guys...
Since you're doing the water pump you may want to replace some old hoses. I prefer Gates first then Dayco. I went on the Gates web site and pulled off the Gates part #'s. The timing belt came from the part store as a Goodyear but with the exact Gates part #, ???. Gates is hard to come by here. The idler and tensioner pulley's were a Dayco kit for about $107. If you go to Texas Toyota online you will get Toyota parts at wholesale, a little more but reasonable. I don't trust any seals but from Toyota. Have you figured out how to get the cam sprocket off/on as well as the crankshaft pulley? Lots of suggestions here about how to get the pulley off, none on how to torque it back on. I could not find a tool, except chain wrench, to get the pulley off. You'd think with the millions of Camrys out there, there would be a tool. I ended up making my own tool as I have a torch and welder. A tool for the oil pump sprocket would also help. You can remove the oil pump cover then use a vise on the sprocket to turn it off/on. With a complete hose set and all belts + water pump my bill came to about $300. Got a good quality torque wrench?

Thanx for the info man. Does dayco make the idler and tensioner kits for a 1992 camry 4 cylinder cuz i looked around and didnt find any. As far installing it i was gonna have a machanic do it as im not really experienced and i really dont want to mess up anything.
Im leaking alittle bit of oil, not sure where its coming from but my machanic says that its the seals. also wat does the distributor do? im not sure if it has anything to do with this this but my heater doesnt come on till i put the fan knob on high. I think i remember the machanic saying that i need to change the distributor but i could be wrong.
Where are you in virginia?
How many miles are on the car?
Have you ever done a set of seal in the past?
Gates is excellent aftermarket stuff without question...but not the ONLY good one.
If your seals are not leaking at all, I would leave them alone.
Water pump is a good idea, but on the last three I have done, I just popped on a belt and adjusted it. One is over 60,000 miles with zero issues...one is way over 70,000 on my cousins car.
(Most people overtighten the heck out of timing belts which causes a failure.
Gates is a very good brand. I use it on my 92 camry and 93 corolla. The timing belt component kit is very good. The tension bearing is made by Nsk or Nok if I remember right. This is the same bearing that you pull out of your factory camry. The timing belt is label with "Power Grip and some Japanese characters". Gates just package it and sell it for you less than what you pay at the Toyota dealer. On Gates belt, there is no Japanese charaters. You can go to there website www.gates.com and get the part number. Napa carries all of Gates product. Napa products use Gates last 3 or 4 digit number and the prefix would be "NBH". As for cam and crank seal, Gates is also good. Felpro and Beck Arkney seals are also good. Napa website is good. It shows you picture of what you are buying. The web site is www.napaonline.com. As for as tool to take the pulley off the camshaft "Cam Gear Sprocket Tool", there is such a tool. Gates do make them. The part # is 91008. Carquest use the same part number as Gates. For Napa, there part number is "NBH140" and the cost is $70.00. I think you can get it at Advance Auto Parts for that tool. After I changed all that you mentioned, the cars don't have a single drop of oil on the driveway. The car should last for another 50K miles. Good luck and hope this will help.
You asked if there were anything else that anyone would recommend replacing. It may seem obvious and probably was already your intention, but while you have the PS and Alt/AC belts off anyway, you might as well replace them too.
I have not done a timing belt on a Gen3, but I have done it on a Gen2 and I know the same applies to a Gen4 (my next to do) as far as how to hold the crank and/or cams still. The cam(s) can be held still by removing the valve cover (may need a new gasket here anyway if you are seeping oil), finding the hex-shaped area on the camshaft, and holding it with a wrench. The crank can be held still by removing the starter and inserting a large screwdriver/prybar into the flywheel teeth. I have since bought a tool off of eBay for around $40 shipped (below) that can be placed in the holes of the cams and oil pump pulley. I plan on using it for my future timing belt jobs.
Thanx alot for all the info guys, sorry for the late replies as im busy working and getting ready for finals.
Gumbydammit, Im in blacksburg virginia where all the shooting happened two weeks ago. But im ok, so blessed to be here. As for my camry i have 214k miles on it. It still runs strong tho. Only problems shocks are out and also small leak on the bottom of the car. I bought the car used at 160 miles so i havent done any seals and i dont have any records of the other owner doing it.
Monkey123, do you have any experience with the gates water pump? i found a deal on ebay where it combined the gates water pump and timing belt kit for 105. I thought it was a good deal. What do you think?
ycartf, this may be a stupid quesition but since i dont use the a/c on my car is it worth replacing it? Also i always backed up from fixing my a/c because of it affecting the engine, do u think its worth fixing it or just leave it alone since the car has alot of miles. As for my engine it runs strong and havent had any issues.
Your fixing your AC or not will not affect the engine.
It uses a tiny bit of power to run it, but besides using a little more fuel if you turn it on, it will not matter.
Where are you going to be doing this job?
Have you done this before?
Do you have the right tools for it?
You are 1.4 hours from me.
(Glad the freak did not hit you during his rampage...and I wish the RA had been packing and put that whack-o's brains all over the wall early on.)
Gates water pump is good. I bought to changed the timing component kit and the water pump 1 to 2 months ago for my friend on a Nissan Quest 1996 (Minivan). Most problem with water pump is the leak at the seal as its became harden overtime. Glad to help.
Just finished the whole job on my '93. Bought a cheap $110 shipped kit of ebay from "KLK Parts" Everything looked to be very quality stuff (Made in Japan) I was impressed, and I would reccomend checking them out. I posted a link here a few weeks ago... Their kit included new waterpump, belt, idler and tensioner pulleys, crank and cam seals. I used everything except the cam seals and the car is running quite well... Just my $0.02
