Anyone know how to bench bleed a master cylinder?

I just ordered a master cylinder for my 97 XLE. Was told that I needed to bench bleed it.. Anyone have any tips on how to do this? I have a vice and was told that I need to use a plunger or something to force the piston inside.... I get lost after that point... Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

ok first of all let me say ive only done this on a very old master cylinder from 1972. that being said, i clamped it down first to assure it wont move. next i sealed up one of the 2 brake line ports. then i filled it up with fluid and secured the cap. finally i just used a round tiped crow bar to push on the pistion that leads the the break booster. DO NOT let the resivor go dry or ur spinning ur wheels so to speak. after my front brake line port and pluming was done i switched, again im not sure how many ports the camry cylinder has. thats how i did it and it worked very well for me on that paricular car, id imagine it would be about the same on the camry.

To add to the link toyomoho referenced, you must push the piston in slowly. You do not want to create more air bubbles by pushing it in too rapidly.

To bench bleed the brake master, you want to get the fluid going through the system (and the air out) before putting it in the car. You will want a way to route the air bubbles and fluid out of the exit ports back into the resivoir (or into a container).

You can put the MC in a vice, open the ports (slightly), and pump the piston slowly until all fluid and no air comes out. Then put the MC in the car. You will still have to bleed the brakes after putting the MC in the car.
