3rd Generation Fuel MPG for Toyota Cam 94 V6' XLE

I have a 1994 Toyota Cam XLE V6' and recently i have seen a very worse and terrible MPG. I recently have been only getting 16 MPG and on my dashboard i have a check engine light. When i took it to my friend (mechanic, family friend) he said that O2 Sensor had to be changed. We gave it to him and he changed the bank 2 O2 Sensor for $360 dollars. I got the car back and the check engine light is still their and im still gettting the 16 MPG. I feel like this guy was ripping me off to the core and i really dont know what to do.

anyone can give me some advice? how much does the cost of an O2 sensor is? is repairing the O2 Sensor not worth it? do dealers check on the check engine lights for free?

Firstly, I get about 21-23mpg, when about 40/60 city and highway miles.

When I first got my car, I had the check engine light on as well, and it was the O2 sensor. It was the Bank 1 sensor 2 I believe (one closest to the firewall), which cost me around $250. Then a few weeks later the light came on again, and it was the O2 sensor again, but this one was the Bank 2 sensor 1 I think (it was the one near the CAT), which cost me about $200 to fix.

After that I dont have the light on anymore, and i'm getting a bit better mpg. I was getting around 18-20 before.

I heard that you can try removing the O2 sensor and clean it, but that doesnt always work. And no, dealers will charge you a full hours labor to read the code most likely. Go to auto zone and have them read it, but since they dont know much they will probably say "we only read codes on 96+ cars", but you have an OBDII port, so there machines will read it.

to determine whats wrong, you need to find out what the code is that has the check engine light on in the first place. to get the code, open the hood and find the diagnostic port. make a jumper wire(paper clip would work) and bridge the terminals TE1 and E1(should be a terminal key on the port). turn the ignition to the accessory position and count the number of times the check engine light flashes. be sure to account for a pause between the two sets of flashes. for example you may get a code 26 or a code 42. in those you would get two flashes a pause and then six more flashes for a code 26 or four flashes a pause and then two flashes. this will tell you the code. post back what you find

$360 just for one sensor is way too much - if he's a family friend then why did he give the car back with the engine light on?

You can check O2 sensor pricing online (~$100 online, ~$125 at auto stores):

I got the same O2 sensor for $150 at the dealer, and installed it myself, with some cursing.
