Hawk HPS Pads question

Do you need to use the factory metal shims when putting Hawks on in the front? I called Hawk customer service and they told me no because their pads are manufactured with a metal backing embedded into the pad. I was told to just put anti-squeal compound onto this embedded backing. But now I've had a squealing noise for about 2000 miles, way past break-in time. Just wondering if anyone used the shims before I redo the install. My rotors were new when the pads were installed. Stopping power is better..but I could do without the squeal.

I have always replaced the shims with whatever brand pads I have fitted.

the sad thing about the camry is if you use anything besides oem replacements you will end up with brake noise. I totally belive it has to do with the way the caliper is designed but even using shims with tons of grease wont help. you can try to slightly sand down the edges of the meat of the pad and see if it helps. my experiece tells me to replace with oem replacements for no noise.

akebono proACT ceramics is a brand that is basically oem toyota.

3rd Generation Hawk Pads

I used the OEM hardware with my Hawk pads. I also installed Brembo rotors and I do get a slight noise if the brakes are applied lightly, but stand on them and the car will STOP!!! I only hear the slight screach if my window is rolled down.

100% IDENTICLE setup to me, and same noise description too.

I only remember my Hawks being noisy when they were cold. The were fine after they warmed up.

Thanks for info

I get the sound when I drag the brakes..but not when I use moderate pressure..stopping power is better..and I notice there is less brake dust..I've already learned to live with it..
