new timing belt and water pump, making this Electric motor noise
new bearings ( GMB, why are they made in korea though?) New OEM belt, new OEM Waterpump, I just finished installing them today, everything' smooth except as RPM raises, I get this, electric whining noise. Doesn't sound too unhealthy, but I"m sure it's from either the timing cover area. ( small enough to not notice anything on the highway )
Is it just the "new" belt or waterpump running in? or the belt might be too tight? These belts are known to loosening up over time, so I guess that wouldn't be a big deal here.
the way I set the tension is to turn the crank pulley clockwise until the belt tense up, then gave the pulley just a TINY bit of push, and tightened the bolt down.
I just purchased my 95 and it came with the sound you describe, but only when cold. Once the engine warms the sound goes away. I have not been able to isolate. I'm in the middle of a major timing belt change with new P/S pump, water pump, and new belts. If the noise is gone on start-up then it was one of those components.

Just got done with my timing belt major service. The "electric" noise when cold has disappeared. This doesn't help blueapple much, maybe, but the noise was probably one of the belts; timing, P/S, alternator. I also changed the idler and tension pulleys, could have been one of them as well???

Check the tension of the pulley with the spring. When I changed mine, I had this "slap" that was so slight that it sounded like a buzzing noise because there wasn't enough tension. You'd have to remove the upper half of the timing belt cover to see if its really the belt rubbing against the cover.

i had the same noise as well when i recently re-installed my timing belt. the pring doesnt give enough tension and causes the belt to slap, so i give some extra tension with a prybar but think i may have put the belt on a little too tight causing that electronic motor noise. its been about two or three weeks (and about 600 miles) and the noise is gone.
I have installed waterpumps and had them make this noise while they "break in"
For the 5s-fe you are supposed to put the belt on with the tensioner resting on spring pressure not bolt pressure, rotate the crank twice, check if its in time then tighten the tensioner bolt, did you guys do it differently? (There is a slightly different process depending on which spring you use too.)

Mine's had this sort of noise ever since I got it. that was about 1 year, 3 months, and 5,000 miles ago. Still makes that sound, but mainly when it just starts. it rises and falls with the engine RPM, and you can only hear if it you're listening for it.
TB was changed at 60k, I got it when it had 90k. (miles) it has 95k miles now.
Different pumps in the car can make whining noises, transmission fluid pump, water pump, power steering are three major pumps that will make noise occasionally. Doesn't mean anything is wrong though.

Yeah i'm thinking my noise (don't mean to hijack, but hey...) is the water pump. i don't have a transmission pump (at least I don't think manuals have them ), and I know a power steering pump noise when I hear it.
I suppose it could also be my alternator, as I have a crummy battery, and it only makes the noise at startup... Gonna have to check on that now
... I just put a new belt and Water Pump on my 5S-FE. I went to the dealer and purchased a new No. 1 Pulley Spring ... something about a new spring specification to prevent belt slap or oscillation. Also, I noticed that the No. 1 Pulley seemed to bind a little as I was adjusting it according to the procedure described here ... starts on page 23 or 24: http://www.camrymanuals.com/manuals/...hanical_I4.pdf
....A couple of revolutions and a little tugging seemed to get the belt back up against the plate, straight, and not sliding off. It took one or two tries to get the belt tension properly distributed ... shouldn't be any great deal of belt slack in the upper timing cover area before you loosen the No. 1 idler pulley nut and torque down.
... Next time I think I would purchase the kit that gives you a new timing belt and new No. 1 idler pulley. I think you still have to go to the dealer to get the idler pulley spring, though.
... If you are just haphazardly tightening the No. 1 idler pulley bolt, you might want to redo that procedure according to the manual pages referred to above.
.... I had no spurious noises or indications of any belt noise, or anything else.

Actually you can buy the pulley kit (idler & Tensioner with new spring) from parts stores. I purchased a Dayco kit for about $107. Quality looked good. I also re-adjust the T-belt tension from time to time. After installation of new belt I re-adjust after about 500-1000 miles.
