i think cut and reweld is the cheapest solution for a broken flexpipe, and should last for another few years.
i've replaced broken flexpipe with an aftermarket one on my 5sfe, worked perfect,
and i tried to replace the flex pipe for my 1mz when it was broken,
i did called around local muffler shops like midas, and they want $150 to cut and reweld one flex pipe, since my 94 1mz has two flexes on the y pipe, and they said if i want to cut and reweld both, looking at around $250 plus tax, so i spent $160 from ebay for an aftermarket pipe, turn out the pipe didn't sound right, has humming noise when i accelerate above 2500k, and felt weak in power, maybe the y-pipe wasn't bent within spec, so i went online at
www.toyotaoemparts.com and bought a genuine oem toyota flex pipe(came with all heatshields), 3 gaskets and new bolts for $280, installed it, this time sounded right, and reclaimed the lost power, i did all the labor myself, a lot of WD40 on bolts for a week.
i've heard horror stories where toyota owners have attempts to repair the broken flex pipe at the dealer, and the dealer want to replace the entire exhaust system from exhaust manifold to the rear bumper, and rape them with $1000 +
