USA 1995 camry coolant gauge not working

i have a 95 camry v6 1mzfe engine, my coolant gauge doesnt work. i changed the t-stat, and the sensor on the left side of the engine. i also unplugged the sensor by the t-stat when i unplugged it the fans kicked on so that tell me it is working why doesnt my gauge work. i also disassembled my dash and checked the gauge it seemed fine, i am stumbled. help please.

I'm not sure you have located the gauge sending unit. It will have a single wire to it. If the gauge is inoperative and you disconnect the wire to the sending unit and ground it, the gauge should go to full hot. If it does, replace the sending unit.

my coolant gauge works, but rarely, like itll flicker on and off,
is the sending unit a box near the sensor?
i have a 5sfe

Not sure of your year but mine is located on the outlet manifold of the cooling system, where the upper rad hose is connected. There are 3 sensors there. The one with the single wire is it. Yours sounds like loose/bad connection at plug.

yes mine is a 94, and last year when i was replacing the distributor i broke off the top of the middle one, (of the three sensors), and it ran like crap and was hard as hell to start the car. but i replaced it, with a used one. but im gonna go out and check it out now

Now I don't know if there are two sensor with a single wire on that manifold. The one you describe sounds like a cold start temp sensor. Car not here to check. I'm pretty sure gauge sender only controls gauge, not ECM rich/lean for cold starts. Check download manual as toyomoho says.

yea i took another look at it and it was the green one that controled the cold startup.
the middle one is the one with one wire. and it didnt do anything when i grounded either of them. so ill pick one up on friday.along with a tstat and some new coolant
