92 Camry - Transmission in [R]

hello all,

1992 camry 4 cyl. Auto, 236K on it. for the past couple of days i've noticed that my [R] gear is stuttering when i drive in reverse only when the car is hot, for eg. if i start the car and go into reverse it backs up smoothly, when i get home from work after about a 45 min drive I get the car to come to a complete stop then put it in reverse and back into my driveway, at this point the car shutters/shakes when i back in. Any idea of what it would be? cheap fix? will i need a new trans soon? any suggestions will help

well if you figure it out let me know, i have the opposite problem with my 93 v-6. It shudders in drive not reverse. I still think its the solenoids but some other people tell me its not that likely. There is one called a shift lock solenoid that controls the locking of the gear. Somewhere else to start is changing the filter and replacing the fluid. Also get a quart of Lucas trans fluid, its very very thick stuff that will help prevent shudder

Could be a reverse clutch going out requiring taking the trans apart to fix. Download the service info at the link below.
