3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Im hearing a little screaching from my pads, so im going to be replacing them soon. Since I dont know how to change the pads, im going to ask a friend or take it to shop and let them change them. If I take it to my friend, then im going to buy the parts myself. Im wondering which type of pads are best that doesnt give alot of brake dust, quiet and very good stopping power. I was looking over brembo sport pads and they are OK, I guess. Tell me what pads you guys suggest, thanks.
I am going to change my brake pads as well. As I know the OEM manufacturer for Toyota is Akebono with their ProACT ceramic pads (ACT476 for front and ACT325 for rear). In general ceramic pads seems to be better than semi-metallic. They generate less dust, do not squeak and last longer. At least according to some experts.

i have always used oem pads in my solara and camry, they are the best way to go hands down. If you decide to also change rotors go with Brembo rotors. you may also want to consider upgrading to stainless steel brakelines and dot4 - i know a few people here are tryin to sell techna-fit sets.
I loved the Hawk HPS pads on my camry, low noise and low dust, great improvement in performance. Ill be installing them on my solara as well when it needs brakes. Cant go wrong with Hawk IMO

is it true that ceramic pads make the rotors life shorter?
i dont want stock pads, i want something better than stock...

Unless you have an XLE you don't have ceramic pads. Yes they do tend to wear out rotors quicker than the softer, dustier, and somewhat noisier compounds, but they offer a more linear brake feel, and i guess less fade. Thats why the XLE's have em. I've put my ProACTs up against a lot of stuff, and even when glazed they work well. Akebono does have a more higher performance ceramic now if you check on www.tirerack.com. I plan on getting those next. To give you an idea of what i put my car through, i have brembo cross drilled rotors and they now have score and scorch marks on them.
The thing with the camry is that if you dont go with oem pads your chances of noise is pretty high.

Brake lights aren't broken, I just don't brake.

Thrid for hawks. I just got them for the camry, didnt install yet but we got some on the 4runner and they are great...

I replaced my pads and rotors last weekend and drove 1000mi in 1 week (doing delivery work). It took a couple days (400mi) for the creamic pads to settle in on the Chinese rotors, and everything feels good, although I have to admit that I was expecting a better feel. I told a mechanic I know about the brakes and he told me his family had a couple gen 3 Camry's, the first thing out of his mouth was that Camry's don't stop as well with the ceramic pads, and that the rotors will quickly warp from the ceramics, and that they were not OEM. He said that 'soft' (cheap) rotors do not go well with hard ceramic pads, and that I should get organic pads, that they won't damage the rotors the way the ceramic pads do. Not sure what I'll do, but the point about soft rotors and hard pads seems to make sense.
i plan on getting my rotors from ebay (cheaper), not sure if they are chinese are not but i have heard that if you use ceramic pads, they would warp our rotors and cause shorter life. So if i bought ebay drilled rotors with some Hawk Pads is that a good choice or should i go with OEM pads?
How much did you pay on ebay for the rotors? You can get plain brembo rotors for 50 each off tirerack + another 40ish for some hawks.

EDIT: down to mytop choices....
for Pads: Brembo Sport Pads ($69), Hawk HPS Street ($61), Hawk Performance Ceramic ($64)
and for rotors, im sticking with plain brembos
