Sound after timing belt change

Hello there,

After I changed all my belts and the water pump on a V6 auto with 90k miles and the engine started making a roaring sound. Its a constant roar that really gets loud at about 40mph and up. The engine feels greating driving, but just that constant roar...someone sitting in the passenger seat thought I had installed a new muffler. It could be described as a humming sound.

I've been driving it for about 2000 miles now.

What do you think it could be? Everything feels great except that roar. Thanks!

If the noise (hum) started when after you changed belt and WP this would be the logical place to start. Use a piece of rubber hose as stethoscope to check for noise in the belt area. Belt might be hitting something, belt slap, etc.

Hmm, I know that the volume of the humming increases as the MPH increases. At idle and below 40mph it feels like a normal engine running.

Maybe the belt is rubbing on the timing belt cover someplace? IF you could record it or post a video with sound on youtube or something it might help some people to help you figure out what the roaring is.

Hey thank you all for trying to help me get down to the bottom of this.

I had my tires replaced and the guy said its my front bearings going wrong.
Then I went out with a friend one day, and he told me its the rear right bearing.
I replaced that and the noise got better, but was still there.
Finally, the guy who put the bearing into the hub for me said its the rear left.
I replaced that, and my two months agony was fixed.

It was difficult to pinpoint where the humming was coming from.
Sitting in the rear I could hear the other rotating sound (indication of the bad bearing), but I could not figure out the humming.

Coincidentally, the sounds started right after I finished my timing belt/water pump change.
BTW for those of you who do your own work, the rear bearings do not need to be replaced with the hub assembly. I know the manuals said so, but mine was pulled out, and pressed in successfully, and now my car drives great. Very easy DIY.

Unfortunately, I had an allignment done, and Firestone told me both my front inner tie rod ends are getting bad. Thats the next project....
