3rd Generation My ABS light wont switch off

I start the car and the lights out, drive a bit and it comes on and doesnt go back out.

The car has failed its yearly test on the fact the light wont go out. The mechanic got an auto electrician to have a look but he said he couldnt 'plug into the system' (im guessing the ABS ECU??) now the mechanic says the car should go to Toyota and that they will charge alot for labour and the car may need new ABS sensors at a cost of between "£50-200 each". Incase you didnt know £200 is $400 PER sensor

What should i do? Should i get a new auto electrician to have a look? Why couldnt the electrician 'plug into the system'??

Thanks

Cool

download the factory service manual. it goes over how to diagnose & troubleshoot the ABS system. It's very simple...

u may also want to look into a recall that had happened to some gen 3s. the abs light would go on as a glitch even though the system was fine and running perfect. it happened to my 95.

Your ABS light is probably on due to either a bad wheel sensor, failed "black box" or some wiring problems between the components. If you don't have the skills or the manual to do this, there are specialists who can diagnose and fix this problem fairly easily. For items like this, I prefer independent mechanics who specialize in Toyotas. As I understand it, the problem with ABS is that if you have a failed component the braking system can fail in a mode so that you have normal braking but no ABS. Or it can fail so that you have one bank of brakes that don't work at all. Imo, this is too serious to just drive around and hope that the light goes out.
