Red face Help! "P0770 Shift Solenoid "E" Malfunction"????

All--

First let me start off by venting. In May of 2006 I bought a used 2000 Toyota Camry from a Toyota Dealership. I've heard that Camry's are one of the most reliable cars on the road so I thought I'd be good...WRONG!!!!

In one year of owning it I have:

1. Replaced the Starter ($800)
2. Replaced the timing belt/water pump/misc. things that go with that ($800)
3. Replaced the TRANSMISSION ($3000)
4. Replaced the exhaust from the enging to the muffler ($600)

Yea, I've spent a little more than $5,000 in repairs in just ONE YEAR!

I live in Virginia, about 8 miles from Washington, DC so not only does everything cost an arm and a leg, but we also have to have an annual safety inspection. After having the exhaust work done (because it wouldn't pass inspection because it had a crack in it) my "Check Engine" light came on. I took it to a friend and he said the following code came up on his little "engine light check-er thingie":

P0770 Shift Solenoid "E" Malfunction

What the heck does that mean??? My first instinct is that it has something to do with the transmission but if you haven't guessed, I know next to nothing about cars....

Please help!

Thx,

Melissa

This solenoid controls torque converter lockup (the O/D system). Could be the shift solenoid, valve body, lock up clutch or something else. The solenoid and body can be worked on with the trans in the car.

What kind of shop do you use, the dealer? Your costs on most of these repairs should be much lower if using an independent shop.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Is there any risk of the car just stalling or dying as I'm driving down the road?

I used an independent shop. I know they're not the cheapest in town but I know them, trust them, and they're good people. For example, if something breaks 2 months after the warranty period is over, they'll still consider under warranty.

Any idea on what this repair might cost me?

Thx,

Melissa

Just a thought, but personally, if I ever had to have a transmission replaced, I would want some kind of proof or guarantee that the transmission fluid cooler (the one in the radiator space), transmission pan, and all external fluid lines had been flushed of any debris, detritus, dirt, and anything else. There could be friction clutch material, rubber seal pieces, and other non-liquid objects that would ruin a new or rebuilt transmission in a very short time.

Yo I had the same problem, what solved it for me was to follow the negative line off the battery down to a ground spot on the transmission, it was there that I took off the bolt used some sand paper to clear the grounding point and then put the bolt back on to hold the fitting down, cleared the code and it never came back, That shit solenoid also uses that grounding point to complete a circuit and if it can't then it throws the p0770 code, so try it and let me know what's up?
