3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm thinking of dropping a 1MZFE that I can get relatively cheap into the Camry. Will the current auto from the 5SFE bolt up to the 1MZFE, or would I have to grab the tranny too?

You'd blow the tranny. If your goign to do it, DO NOT do the swap 1/2 assed. And there is a LOT more then just the engine. Such as all the wiring needs to be changed. ECU as well. Possible the dash harness.

what Eye8Pussies is trying to say is ... do it in the name of science!
tranny explosions are awesome!
But car downtime sux... Less time on the road = less fun.

sicne u have to swap the tranny i suggest swapping the e153 manual. it really lets u take advantage of the V6 and is one of the BEST mods for the camry. i honesty wouldnt even make the 1mz swap if u didnt swap the manual in with it.
So run with the 5sp manual I assume? That's the plan eventually.
I just wanted to know if it'd hold for the being. But at the looks of your posts, probably better to buy it all at once. Plus, install would probably run easier/cheaper.
OK, so checklist.
- 1MZFE engine
- E153 tranny
- 1MZFE ECU
- Manual shifter, shifter cables, etc.... the works.
Something like that, right? I haven't checked up on manual swaps in a while.

EDIT: I'm also finding the engine/tranny on www.car-part.com for about $1000 total (w/o shipping) with decent mileage. This might be a little cheaper than I thought.

with the age of the gen 3 camry, it would be cheaper to buy a manual 1mz from the start honestly... itd be so much easier to do that and theyre so cheap by now, itd probably cost the same..
I am dittoing the fact that S block transmissions will not handle the torque. Look at MR2's doing v6 swaps, and camry's way, way back in the day doing v6 swaps.
They always nuke the transmissions, and the axles are suspect also.

If your going to convert it to manual, do not use the manual tranny from the 4-cyl, use the one from the 6-cyl.
