Oil Pan Removal - Exhaust In Place?

This was asked in the middle of another thread. No answers and no search success so I thought to make my own thread.

I've looked at getting the engine oil pan off without removing the exhaust. There seems to be room to tip and lower the pan, then slide it out without interference from the exhaust or transmission. I'm not sure about getting it past the crankshaft though. FSM says remove exhaust but has anyone pulled the pan with the exhaust in place?

i was able to get the pan off without taking off the exhaust, but it was very difficult to get it on with the exhaust blocking. i ended up taking that part of the exhaust off because every attempt i made with it on, i bumped the lip of the pan on something and wiped off some of the rtv and it put some oil on the lip.

you might be able to get away with just disconnecting the 3 bolts that hold the exhaust to the primary cat converter and shift the rest of the exhaust out of the way. if not, there are 2 bolts that hold that section with the flex pipe to the rest of the exhaust for free and clear access.

Thanks for the reply. It's exhaust out I guess so that I don't mess up the RTV sealant. I wish they'd used a rubber gasket.

Dude ghettosled, I think you should be a part time mechanic. Ever since you had the sludge problem, you have been posting more and more knowledgeable stuff that other people can benefit from.

Toyota doesn't make a rubber gasket for the oil pan but I know that aftermarket companies do.

Be sure to have a set of bolt-outs just in case you round off one of the two bolts at the flex pipe. I didn't have mine on me and have to put eveything back together.

I plan to do mine soon. Maybe I will take pictures. I got a paper gasket from Rockauto.

SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # GK117 Gasket $15
FEL-PRO Part # OS30468C DOHC Engine $8

i replaced the flex pipe exhaust section not too long ago so i was able to unbolt it fairly easily. to get the original one off, i ended up having to cut off the bolts because they were too rusty to unscrew.

the nuts and bolts were pretty much just lumpy piles of rust that barely resembled bolts. keep in mind, i also live in the rust belt because of the snow and salty roads.

I replaced the oil pan seal about two weeks ago. I did not have to remove the exhaust but i did have to remove that thin metal plate towards the driver side (forgot exact name) and a small but thick plate held on by 3 bolts which I believe held the engine and transmission together. If u bend the pan the right way it will come out. Before u put new sealant on the pan do some practice with putting the oil pan back in so that you dont unnecessarily smear the new sealant.

However, my car is still leaking. This time from two places and instead of just one spot before I attempted this task. heh

I was definitely able to remove and reinstall the oil pan without removing any part of the exhaust pipe. Obviously one must do this at his/her own risk. I'm just trying to give you guys my 0.02.
