XXX my ITBS thread

OK so this is my itb thread, like most of you who have the 5sfe motor in there Camry ether love it or hate it, its cut and dry, i happen to love mine. (5 yrs ago hearing all the nay say about the 3sfe and how no one liked it and bla bla bla i turboed mine and saw the value of it and I'm hoping for the same with the 5sfe. anyway enough of my rambling) i enjoy driving my Camry as a daily but it could use a little more in the go department to make it more enjoyable, so i start to mod it. to stay N/a was an easy call because Toyota's don't have any easy motor management ecu mods like the honda boys do. Were I'm at right now the itbs are 85% done and on my moke up head in the basement, since i live in Maine there are not a lot of dynos up here so I'm just going to gtech it (i know i know) for a before and after
whats done to the 94 Camry 5 speed
215,xxx miles (comp psi is good in all cylinders and oil psi is also norm.)
86 oct shit fuel
0 deg timing
punched out 2ed cat
.055 plug gap
ricer air filter
ac compressor delt
ill have the gtech hp after i get back from a ride prob latter tonight and some pics of my itb set up

OK i put in that the weight of the car was 3570 (don't know if I'm in the ballpark or not so please correct )
at that weight the gtech says 118 hp @ 5200 rpm

i also did the 0-60 time on the gtech
13.16 w/ full tank of gas(witch depressed the hell out of me so i didn't bother doing a 1/4 time)

and heres the work Ive got done as of now

very nice. from my experiance with itbs, there not as good as a custon rigged turbo but they give great power and they dont ware on the engine as much. i helped a buddy do it on a 2.0 jetta with great results and it was cheaper then turbo. get some vids up too when u get it done, im courious how that will sound.

I heard punching out the cat might even make it lose power, just put in a straight pipe or leave the cat alone.

Are the intake tracks the proper length for where the engine makes peak power? Iirc, some d00d got ~150whp out of an 8V 1.8L VW engine that's over 20 years old, so you should be able to get ~150-200whp a 2L dohc engine that's only about ten years old with the proper setup. Also, iirc you may need a SAFI like megasquirt to really get the bang for your buck.

ITB is individual throttle bodies.

THis would be cool if its on a V6... but I guess it would be hard to implement.

in theory u can do it on any engine. 2,4,6,8, ect. old hot rods to the same sorta thing, the old 440 sixpack is nothing but 3, 2 barrel carbs instead of 1 larger 4 barrel. it would be harder on a v6 because ud have rig up more tbs but its possible. not the best option for the v6 but an option.

Cool

http://www.homemadeturbo.com/tech_pr...itb/index.html

evo, the problem with ITB's on the toy-transverse v6's is that the ports in the intake manifold do not line up. Making throttles work together would be hard to impliment.

The other main problems with ITB's are driveability, tuneability, and filtration. The irony, is that the majority of people that run ITB's, eventually cap them with a pleumn chamber of X volume & flow connected to a typical main cone filter.
At which point, coulda just stayed single throttlebody & made a descent intake manifold instead.

ITB's normally stick for hardcore N/A racecars for those reasons. (and even then not because they're nessiceraily "better")

cascadedhart - we'll take gtech runs, provided they're with updated software & firmware. I run my gtech pro/comp to this day.

Good luck with the concept, you can definitely knock that curb weight down a bit. Gen3 5-speed DX Camrys typically checked in just under or just over 3000 lbs. Having owned both the 3S and 5S motors, I preferred the 5S stock vs stock for its better midrange torque. Probably a function of displacement over anything else though seeing as you have ~200 cc's more to play with.

I was just thinking about how the rear bank is like, in the back and teh TB's would be hard to install and would be tiny....

I'm not really neccessarily thinking power when I was wondering ITB for the V6, just wondering how it would sound like.

Cool

It wound sound great. That imo is the biggest draw to ITB's along with throttle responce.

The lower intake manifold looks like this. You can see how the mild off-set between the two banks to keep the manifolds as compact as possible presents a unique problem with ITB's. Having them in multiple positions is not the problem, the problem is that there's no direct line of site to both banks. You cuold get away with it by orientating the linkages on the outside of both, but that would require changing the linkages on the tb's, or using different TB's on each side.

Plus there is very little space, so you'd have to do like the OEM upper manifold && curve the manifold towards the right hand bank where you have more room in the engine bay.
